Q: What happened to this site?

Why did this website vanish for a week? Something to do with the IP attacks cat with a tie mentioned?

There is a fairly reasonable article about methods to protect against a DDoS here: http://www.w3.org/Security/faq/wwwsf6.html  (Scroll down to the bottom to find the most useful information.)

Another way is to make sure your ISP allots enough bandwidth for the attacks so they don't overwhelm the system.

And lastly, if you are using server logs, get rid of them.  The R/W action alone during a DDoS can bring a server to its knees.
