Q: What happens to my Chinese bank account after I leave China and my visa expires?

I created a bank account with BoC when I first came to China. It's a personal account, not sponsored by my previous Chinese employer.  I moved home a few months ago and my visa will expire soon. Will that in any way affect my bank account? I've still got a few thousand RMB in there for when I return to China on holiday in the future. Thanks!

The fact that your visa expires, and also that sometime in the future you may get another one, has no effect what so ever on your Bank of China account. Now, if your passport expires, and you renew it, I suggest to you to bring the old one with you if you return to China, since it is the one on record at the bank. You will have to see an officer and show both passports (the old expired one and the new), so they change the records. But if you do have an ATM card, you will not need to do so for deposits or withdrawls up to 5,000 yuan per day.
Please also bear in mind that if your account shows no activity for a period of time (and I do not recall the number of months required), it will be classified in a different category, and if you try to access it thru an ATM machine, you will be denied access and will have to go and see a Bank Officer to re-activate it, a simple process.
From 2004 thru 2009 I had an account with Bank of China while overseas. I made arrangements with a local ExPat friend of mine, and he deposited 20 to 50 kuai on it every 3 or 4 months to keep it current, and I had no problems accessing it when arriving in China. It was also nice because it allowed me to wire transfer money from abroad prior to a visit, eliminating the need to carry money cash on a trip.

As far as i know nothing will happen. You are probably paying a small annual fee for the account, that will eat up more than any interest you are getting.

Scandinavian:

remember to change your contact details so the bank can still get to you, e.g. for us SMS seems to be in play for the bank, if we're not in China, I doubt I'd keep my cell phone number

I have several bank account and i don't use them all. And they are  still active.   You will surely be charge for something per year ( very small amount) . It has nothing to do with our visa or the amount of money.

For real nothing is gonna happen to it, i once traveled out of china for 3 months, when i came back i tried to withdraw some cash from the atm but i was denied so i have to take my passport with me to the bank so that the can reactivate my acct.. In less than 3 min it was done and i was able to withdraw some cash... but if your with a renewed passport, you need to show them the old one so that ur data can be updated with the new one.. cheers.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
