Q: What kind of trouble can you get into for getting into a fight?

Legally speaking, if you're caught by police punching a guy or kneeing him in the groin and he presses charges, just how bad can it get?

Would it actually go to court or would it be something solved easily by paying him 1000 RMB or whatever. Could he actually sue you for 100,000 RMB?

Could they stop you at the airport because of something as trivial as this?

FYI, no I didn't punch or knee anyone in the groin. I just want to know what would happen if I gave in to an impulse.

first do not fight,
if you are fighting than fight like daredevil. if you want to fight in china, fight in group better do not be caught by police. atleast do not beat a person to death, just go around it. And legal issue pressing charges,  police is a bit corrupt money can do any wonders so better be careful.

As Xerxes well said, DO NOT FIGHT in China.

You, as a foreigner, could expose yourself to a wide range of possible consecuences if caught in a fight.  It will be hard to predict, but it could range from paying a fine, or paying a bribe (or a few ones) to have the charges dropped, to a jail term, and even deportation after the jail term.

Worse case scenario would be a fight between a foreigner and a local, with a fight between two foreigners not too far behind.  Locals do not normally have fist fights, they shove eachother around most of the time.  Otherwise, it would be a lost of "face".

The last case I dealt with with a foreigner fighting a Chinese citizen was difficult. He was married to a Chinese women but the result was deportation. They were nice enough to let them stay for three months to straighten things out family wise, but he is not allowed to reapply for two years.

The only case you can fight a Chinese citizen is self-defense meaning they struck you first and was going to strike again and being robbed. If you strike a Chinese citizen who is intoxicated or try and help a friend or anything else it's deportation unless you can bribe the defendant

there is no one rule to determine how it turns out, it differs with every place, every policeman, and every situation.

Last week a friend was drunk and doesnt remember anything but being taken home by the police. He was threatened with deportation, and it was a serious. He got lucky, but it could just as easily gone the opposite way with fines and jail.... you never know... so as xerxes (and all our mothers) said do not fight
