Beijing! One of the lucky ones. The people who live in places like Shijiazhuang have my respect as it must be difficult to to live there as a foreigner because there aren't many things you could get at home.
I lived in Guilin for four years and moved to Beijing last August. Guilin wasn't bad, I would not have been there for four years if I didnt like it, but I much prefer Beijing.
nevermind:
I've been in BJ three years. It's amazing how many more conveniences have popped up since then. It is great, but at the same time I feel something's lost in it. Really going out of our way to do things or make things made for a tight knit community.

Lucky I love Guilin but cant get work there would move tomorrow from this concrete jungle Beijing
GuilinRaf:
@ MrPopular, if you want send me a pm with what kind of job y ou want, and maybe I can help. Nevermind, yes, like everything you have your pro and con.
I spent my first 5 years in Harbin. Now I have been here in Daqing since September. The two cities, although geographically close are actually like night and day. Daqing is much more modern looking and certainly has less construction. The expat community is much smaller as well.

Derek, I don't know if you are aware of this, but several years back there were really a series of horrific riots in Daqing. The army was called in to "restore order". It had something to do with the oil industry and the downsizing that was going on. It was even mentioned in the local press. I hear that Daqing can be terribly, terribly cold thought for long period of time -- something like - 40 C. True?
LIved in Nanchang for 2 years,Dirty city and the people are un-friendly moved to Beijing but had enough of the concret jungle

Many of my Chinese friends tell me that in Nanchang there is a great deal of petty thievery, house invasions, etc, etc. Did you ever hear of any of this when you were there?
mrpopular:
Yes many times and also I and colleage both had our motor cycles stolen, after we had only had them for 6 months, never to be seen again and they had alarms on and locks go figure last place in China I would want to go back to
Guangzhou is my favorite. When I first saw it, I felt like I was in a South American city -- so many of the buildings are pastel-colored; for other reasons, like the congestion on the streets, and the lack of overall building coherence, the smells, the sights, Xiaman Dao, the weather, Cantonese food, so great, a really great and new subway system, the overall friendliness of the inhabitants, etc. Yet, somehow, somehow, in the end, it all comes together so nicely and finally all those plants that flower all year round. Also, it's just so dynamic -- I could feel that it is city on the march upwards.
Shenzhen. Sure beats the winters back home.
I am sure BJ has it's plus sides but you could not pay me to live there with the bad air and freezing cold. Besides, I can go to HK whenever I want here.
I moved to shenzhen last April, but Beijing is my favorite.
Luxu a little industrial village outside of Suzhou. Before that, Chongqing was home.
Changsha. Love it! Just the right size, with great food, friendly people, and lots of artistic activities. I live just off the city center, so in 30 minutes I can walk anywhere I need to be and buy whatever I want. Also, lots of parks and art museums right around the corner.
Also, right down the road from Zhang Jia Jie and Feng Huang, which is a photographers paradise!
Nanning, China's green city. Not so big you can't find your way around, good people, good climate apart from the humidity which makes this time of year seem colder than it really is.
