Q: What pets can I have in China?

I am wanting to move to China, but I want to own pets there. What I really want is small pets and a cat. Can I have guinea pigs in China. Also can I have cats in China?

Depending on where you live you have to be very careful about owning pets in China. I had a friend own a dog and it went missing. He got lucky and found it tied up and still breathing on a meat market. In plenty of places plenty of people are plenty hungry. Pets gotta beware. In my experience birds don't even fly through some parts of China.

We have two dogs here. If they are outside our apartment they are ALWAYS on a leash.  Also don't trust anyone trying to give food to your dogs.  If you get a dog or a cat, I strongly recommend buying imported food for them.

You can have pretty much "the normal range" of pets in China. If you buy a pet, you will find it hard to make sure the pet is healthy.

A girl in our family recently bought a Beagle puppy. It lasted 5 days before it died from canine distemper. You should find a trustworthy vet before you find your pet. Once you have found the pet, tell the seller you will condition the deal based on you vet giving it a clean health certificate. It is generally not that expensive to go to the vet, so it will be money well spent.

We have a vet that is sort of OK, one woman that works there appears to know what she is doing, the rest seems like kids in training.

You're going to want to be careful where you buy pets.  I've heard of people who bought seemingly healthy dogs from a pet shop only to have them die in agony the next week.  Some pet store owners drug sick animals to make them seem healthy.

You can have a traditional Chinese pet, a cricket. You keep it in a cage and care for it and it will sing for you. You can train them to fight, cricket fights are big, you could even make money. I coloured a Praying Mantis with a black felt pen and entered it in a match. By the time our round was up , everybody was too drunk to notice, but they were impressed that my cricket knew kungfu and ate the loser.
