Q: What is the purpose of this website?
Is it still ok to ask and answer and comment honestly without fear of incrimination?
Is it a place where we can all discuss the pros and cons of living in China?
I love to talk about it all. The good and bad and ugly but really...has this site changed in the past few months with foreigner bashing and Chinese apologetics?
I am as guilty as it comes for being sucked into these flame wars but honestly...what is this site really for?
I believe in discussing all things...some good and some bad...in China.
Or should this be a harmonized placed where we are all politically correct and only sing praises for all things Chinese?
Personally I think people appreciate the honesty here...good and bad..regardless whether it's a long timer or those considering taking the plunge for the first time.
I thought this was an expat site. It is in English. It is a place to discuss China related questions,,,see above. There are many good experiences in China and some bad., Some things are not understood- cultural differences. Life in China is often frustrating, the lack of safety or any courtesy in crossing the street, the spitting etc. I think this is a place to vent these frustrations. I've learned things like that I need a VPN, actually never knew anything about things like this.
For sometime now it seems if you vent about China, you will get an arguement. I think this just makes it worse and I honestly feel that some here just like being a shit disturber and like arguing. I've noticed the baiting.
Maybe things will get back to normal now that Mattys posting 3 dumbass questions in a row and the first series are not even China related.
I had a post harmonized yesterday. I asked if the red menace should be stopped. By that I was refering to Chinese businesses oozing their corruption into other nations and trying, and succeeding, in bribing western politicians...etc.

unneeded, unmerited and often endless personal attacks, well, that's another thing.
I actually find that this Board has become much more civilized lately, save for a little group. Six months ago, it was open season hunting grounds around here. That seems to have changed. The posts, for the most part, are far more interesting, and the abuse has been visibly contained to just a few.
The Board should be welcoming, tolerant, kind. It has a long way to go.

Bad posters remain and some open more than one account.
Personal attacks, which were not allowed before now go unpunished. At the most, we get a "notice" but that is completely useless. name calling continues.

Well sometimes this place does start to resemble a Youtube comment section, and a lot of questions/answers are either inappropriate (even I am guilty, I'm trying to slow down on the curses) or utterly useless.
And some REALLY need to be deleted, like the ones from people asking how to get a girlfriend here, or Chinese women asking about love/sex with foreigners, and the whole iPad story.

This site has now become the personal playground of the gang of four. It used to be a place where foreigners could discuss things in China ,both good and bad. Now, it has b become a place where only good things can be discussed and where those who feel that China is "perfect" are allowed to heap abuse upon insult upon snide remarks on those who present any hint of complaint, even when the complaint is heavily laced with caveats that they do not mean the majority of Chinese people, etc.
That is why I now more often than not, PM people with advice and answers to questions that they may have.

GR, I'm sorry you feel that way, I honestly am, I've always seen you as one of the more reasonable posters.
As for myself, I don't recall ever having attacked anti-China / Chinese remarks that have a qualifying caveat, e.g. 'some', 'many', 'most' or large groups' etc, (although I won't rule that out entirely, no-one is perfect). I don't view China as perfect, a long way short of that, but I do think those of us who work and live here have a responsibility to attempt to integrate as much as we can. Can we say what we don't like? Of course we can, just use those caveats you referred to, and try and remember (how can you forget) this is China, it is often a mistake to assume the way things are done in your home nation are the best way for China or the Chinese. I call the projecting your morals onto another race / place, and that I think is a mistake. Those are my views borne of my experiences in the UK where immigrant communities have failed to integrate leading to rising racism, I don't want that here as I am trying to raise a family here.
I won't apologise, or even regret, that many posters have reigned in their more obviously racist comments, that was what I hoped for, I am, and hopefully always will be, of the opinion that racism is one of the most evil ideas in humanity and potentially the most destructive, and it should be attacked wherever it is found as if you don't you allow it to fester and grow, and history is full of examples of what happens in such situations.
I have always tried to be respectful, (while admitting I have often failed) but I see no reason, why people cannot continue to post and criticise, I just ask that they do so without racism, sweeping generalisations and personal abuse.

Actually Hugh, you were not among the people I was directing my opinion at. To the best of my knowledge I have never been offended by any of your posts even when I have disagreed with them. Your anger and annoyance has shown on occasion, but hey, it is on occasion and we are all entitled to that as well.
Standing up for China is good, as there are indeed some posters here that never see anything good about China. My problem is those who are consistently rude, engage in name calling and do not allow ANY criticism about China at all. For some of these guys, even qualifying statements like "some" or "many" is not enough. That is not you.

Personally I don't see any problem with anyone coming to this site. if someone has nothing to say then i'll eventually stop reading their posts. It takes two to have an argument. There are a number of people on this site who I ignore completely. It's easy, you just skip right past, no bother whatsoever.

Of course. This website is for ANYONE to discuss ANYTHING about China. Welcome to the board! We may have strong opinions here, but keep in mind that although it may seem like we're making sweeping generalizations, most of us do NOT hate Chinese people, nor do we hate China.
We only hate bad things, but that goes for bad things everywhere. Many of us post here to vent our frustrations, share our life experiences, etc. As long as it has to do with China, you'll always be on topic! Again, welcome to the board.
