Well, you could flip out on that person, but it won't get your money back. Maybe you shop around before buying something next time.

In retrospect, I really do not think there is anything you could do.  You wanted an item, he quoted you 2,000 Rmb, and you agreed and pay for it.

So he made an extra profit, so you can buy a baseball bat and practice a few swings using his head as a baseball.  But the consequences of that will probably be worse than loosing 1,000 Rmb.  Chalk it to experience, and from now on, as many suggested before me, do your homework and have an idea of the price before you walk into the first store you visit.  Or visit a few and bargain to find the cheapest one.

use this as a lesson. 1 understand where you are. 2. understand the kind of people you are dealing with (they were born and raised here and only taught to live this way) 3. do your homework. (check online, or go to 20 vendors seeing what's the lowest you could get them to go)
bargaining in china is easy. there are 20 stalls selling the same damn products just be dedicated and have a plan

And, get yourself a local friend... they can give you a better idea of a local price, can do all the bargaining, and you'll get a more realistic price - just don't be seen with them beforehand! If you are doing it together, then that price suddenly rises...

Since it was in broad daylight, you at least know that person isn't a vampire, so don't bother going back to them with garlic or holy water. They could be some other sort of demon, though...you'll have to do some more research!

DaBen:

I've found the vampiric shop-owners to offer better deals and not cheat me out of my money. It probably has something to do about having a steady flow of repeat customs, kinda like tending an apple tree so you can pluck a nice juicy treat whenever you're hungry.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
