Q: What would be Mao's thought about today's China?

Considering that he was fighting against most of today's problems such as inequalities, the objectification of women, ... I don't say that he was a good man, he was a fool.

He didn't really fight for those things. Mao left a legacy of stupid ideas. Mao said Chinese people must have fresh air, they open windows when its cold, Mao said sparrows were an enemy, Chinese killed them, caused a famine. Mao hated toilets and liked to shit in the palace gardens, you know how that went.

Eorthisio:

Yeah I know, he also hated brushing his teeth, that's why people who can afford toothpaste still have rotten teeth, and when he finally brushed it he then rinsed it with green tea, basically useless. He also said that sputum is better outside the body than inside, he probably never heard of germs spreading.

Scandinavian:

Not being aware of germ theory fits well with China being at least 100 years behind the rest of the world. Pasteur had made good evidence of germs 100 years before Mao's time. (others before Pasteur)

You have to remember Mao was fucking crazy. He'd be pissed off at what he received as anti-revolutionary thoughts for example the whole get opening up and rich thing, financial markets, private enterprise, opening for FDI cooperation with Russia, Japan, and so on.

He would like that the CCP still had absolute power (although not in his image), that the press was still under control and that there was a large focus on nationalism and patriotism.

All in all I think that crazy fucker would try to pull off another cultural revolution to bring back the spirit of the revolution and so he could personally kill and torture people, which apparently was one of his hobbies.

From the answers I get the feeling Mao was in fact a Wumao???

I ve never been a good student of history and so I used to think of him as a very good ruler...

Now this website is giving me some good knowledge

Eorthisio:

From the answers I get that people (not you but others) didn't finish to read my question, I said that I don't like Mao and know that he was a fool, still people are answering with "you must know that Mao was crazy" as if I supported him or his ideas.

Maybe Mao had lofty ideals, but he completely failed to implement any positive changes. A good leader would make a positive difference even in a hard-to-manage place like China, but he either failed or wasn't trying. Since he was maintaining an absolute dictatorship, I'd say he wasn't trying. If you read the extent of the cultural revolution and Mao's rule in China on Wikipedeia, one thing will be apparrent: He was paranoid about losing absolute control, and for good reason. Even his chosen successor couldn't wait his turn and tried to assassinate him.

To this day, Chinese people think in static hierarchies, with a one-dimensional view on power. People are not satisfied carving out a niche for themselves in the system, to be a useful contributor to society. Everyone has their eyes on the prize, and those that think they have a chance at it, will go to extremes to climb that ladder.

1.3 billion people, and the vast majority of them just don't get it. They don't understand that it's the allround useful people that can hold on to power easily, not the ones that 'want to be a bossu'. They don't broaden their skillsets, they see little value in retaining knowledge, or establishing social ties that have no immediate payoff. Schools here talk about the values of teamwork, discipline and leadership, but make no mention of creativity or independence. There's talk about social contribution, but the nationalists here are clueless how to achieve it other than encouraging submissive loyalty.

The Gaokao is an excellent example. Chinese students do what they must (incl. bribes) to pass it, but are notorious of forgetting all they learned by the next month. They simply do what they must to get higher on the ladder. And since they think one-dimensionally about power, many will reason that to get ahead in life, they must disadvantage others, or even cause suffering.

China is severely disfunctional, and it was like this before Mao came. I believe it will remain this way at least for our lifetimes. What would Mao have thought? I don't know. But I'm guessing he was aware of the disfunctionality on some level, and would be disappointed to see it still visibly present in Chinese culture, despite having completely sold out and rebranded their dictatorship.

Scandinavian:

I can't remember the exact quote. But Mao wrote something about the Chinese people being easy to control due to the "nature of the Chinese". Essentially calling them weak.

If he really though the people were easy to control, that would explain why he had so much trouble with rebellious underlings. Give a Chinese any small position of power, and he/she will strive to maximize profits (disregarding any considerations of loyalty and safety) and climb the ladder if they can. One dimensional thinking.
