Q: what would you do about this/

I take my son to the same kindergarten where I work.I passed by his class this morning to check on him and I think he was being a bit of a monkey in class.

I saw one of the teachers smack his arm then grab him  by the arm and pull him across one of the beds where he was playing.

this teacher has smacked him before.I got a shock,I dont think its right that teachers smack children, they should find another method when a child does  not behave well in class.

I dont teach my sons class. as a parent do I say something to the teacher?do I have a chat with the principle?or do I just keep my mouth shut as if nothing has happened?

Try reverse psychology.

Walk up to that teacher and say: Good morning, umm listen yesterday my wife noticed that my sons arm was red, did someone hit him or slap him? Please make sure no one hits my son, if my son is being naughty hey just ask me for help.

This approach will give her the hint and thus keep your job and relationships at work fruitful.

You can talk with the teacher about it. This is not common.

You know nothing about China, this is very common.

You cared and talked about too many negative things in China. That's why you think it's common? You always read news about this and collect it to generate your viewpoint? To live in a country with total different culture backgrounds, can you care about something good? That will make your life better, at least not making you feel like a mardy man who complains a lot. Leave alone your keyboard and talk to more people who do things in real life. Talk is cheap. Talking negatives always makes you cheap.

I second 'teats'.

I received letter of the School's Board about my work, and one of the not good things in my classes is : 'students sleep during the lecture'.

I asked the Board to show me 'how to ...': 'Chinese teacher enters my class (70 students) and confiscate surprise chairs of three sleeping students. He didn't say: 'you can do the same', but I understand so.

Now IMO, I cannot punish Chinese students, because I am laowai. I cannot make them squat in the office for who knows how long. Chinese teachers do that regularly with 16 years old students.

Punishment of students by Chinese teachers was worst in my beginnings in China. Some teachers walked around classroom with stick in hand.

I usually walk in class holding only choke.

Ahhh yeah. Also my students and friends tell me this is common from what they've witnessed. And I've seen this a few times myself. Pointing at what is wrong and saying it is wrong does not mean you are ignoring what is right. But you don't  get a cookie for doing what you're supposed to do.

I'm wasting my time, you'll never understand logical thinking.

When I see sth wrong in AmericaI say it's wrong, same with the UK, Canada, the Phils, Russia etc. . What makes China so special that I should never point out a wrong?

Please learn more about how to be a human, no matter where. You maybe be living special in China with this attitude, but you must live small in your own country. You should feel ashamed about it? Because people in your country can't be gossiping like you or try to prove you're right base on some negative things. The truth is you're right, so what?

I'm really not sure what I'd do.

One thing you should try to do, whatever action you take is ensure the teacher doesn't lose face somehow. It would probably only make him or her vindictive towards your boy, maybe start bullying him.

Your child, your ways.. well, that's the usual attitude! (personally, I disagree... cos it leads to a lot of fucked up kids in the world, because others with more sense don't stop the crap!)

However, I digress... Your kid... if you don't want your child disciplined that way by that teacher, you make it known. Firstly, to the teacher directly (possibly on the quiet). If that doesn't work, take it higher... and maybe more public.

ironman510:

I myself prefer my son to be disciplined by the teacher, in the long run discipline works, it's not pretty but it works. In 2nd grade my son came home and said his chinese math teacher slapped him with a ruler, and I wasn't at all worried about the teacher, I simply asked him: Well, what did you do? I love my kids and all other but you MUST Trust discipline.

But, do the teachers understand 'discipline'? Or is it just that same as what parents and grandparents do? Hit because the child is being annoying??

ironman, you are 100% wrong. You don't trust some uneducated brute to judge when to lay hands on your kid. Especially for that brute to judge how hard to hit your kids. Remember your kid is mixed and in a country that encourages hate towards foreigners. She may have been expressing anger over the International courts ruling or the sale of weapons to S. Korea

nip it in the bud ... speak to the teacher ...  get a reaction ..  assess that reaction. calm now.

does the issue come from home?  be sure you are confident in your beliefs. be sure you are right. Communication with your child and the teacher and the school, before going off the rails.

I was pissed off when I saw it happen, its a tough call

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
