For most health setbacks the treatment is the same. Take it easy, drink water and sleep well.
You'll be better in a day or two.
If it's gastro, don't eat anything much for a couple of days. Definitely no oily food...which rules out chinese food.
Give any thoughts of attending a hospital the flick. Chinese medical treatment is of no use. A/b's and IVT for anything from a splinter to a headache. Ridiculous.
Stay comfortable with sufficient rest. Appetite is often failing, try to eat a little anyway (an apple a day....)
Watch some movies in between naps, make sure to avoid Vin Diesel movies.
Paul,
Keep yourself hydrated. The more you can increase your urination (but with replacing the fluids equally) over the first 72 hours will greatly help.
Do not overly heat your room when you sleep. If you are running a fever, do not pile on the blankets. That is the worst thing that you can do. Keep the room at ambient temperature - minus 1 degree from ambient.
Avoid any and all kinds of dairy products so as to not to increase the production of mucus. Additionally avoid as much as possible all sugars. They also tend to increase the body temperature and they can additionally cause the production of more mucus.
Should your bedding become wet from fever or whatever, change it immediately. Under no circumstances sleep on wet bedding.
If you are a smoker, as much as possible, please try to abstain from smoking until the cold has passed. Many studies now indicates that tobacco usage causes the body to deplete its stored supply of Vitamin C, a vitamin which the body does not manufacture.
Body heat evaporates most rapidly from the head and from the feet. If you go out, keep those parts of your body warm and covered.
On an unrelated note, when you are better, go find some Chinese-speaking friends and go give that son-of-a-b*tch of a neighbor a piece of your mind. He knew that you were helpless and a laowai and that is why he did what he did.

I eat about a head of garlic per week. I peel whole cloves, cut them in half length-wise, then throw them in a hot frying pan with some olive oil for 5 min, med heat. When they're softer, they're less...abrasive...to eat. Wrap them in a lettuce leaf with some beef bits and samjang (Korean red pepper paste, found here everywhere in red or green tubs...get the green tub fyi, less spicy). Heaven. And when / if I get sick, it lasts for a couple days. I rarely get sick. I'm also single! lol
Get a fresh ginger root. Chop and add a few small pieces to boiling water for a hot drink. Add either lemon or honey (real stuff not fake) to taste. Put on your favourite DVD and rest.
