Your best bet really isnt with any of the big chains. The bigger the name and the bigger the company the more middle men will be involved who are mostly concerned with the bottom line.

Companies that sell franchises are hit or miss. There are some good ones and some really terrible ones.

Your best bet is to go with a foreigner owned company that only has one or two branches located across a single city. Those are the most likely to be well controlled and maintained. Also, to check on this, after you apply ask for some contact info from current teachers.

I don't know what sort of answers you are going to get here because there are quite a few schools that do the right thing by their foreign teachers and also allow a bit of licence in how they present the lesson. I teach at Sanqiao also called the 3 Bridges International English School located in Daqing. The school recently celebrated its 10th anniversary which in itself is remarkable - so I'm told. We teach all levels from kindergarten to about age 15 or 16 but we are also contracted out to teach adults that work at the oil company here. We teach British English and certainly not just phrases. As a matter of fact we don't teach just phrases at all. To the adults we teach conversational English and pronunciation as we do to the kids but in simpler context of course.
A good measure of how well the school is thought of by foreign teachers is the average stay of the teachers which clocks in at around 4 years! You get paid on time every time, you have contract negotiations annually, you are given the opportunity to provide input into how the school is run, lots of stuff like that which I guess helps to develop good relationships. The classrooms are well set up and they have lots of students. All the long term teachers are married to Chinese girls which has helped the school retain its foreign staff. A stable workforce of good foreign teachers really helps the school maintain a good name and consistency of teaching methods. Apart from the cold weather, which is brutal in winter, there's no reason to move on after a 12 month contract.
I hope this is the sort of info you were looking for.

Aston School, big and in lots of cities in China. They don't care what you do as long as the students are OK with it. There you grade the exams as long as no one fails. It's the worst job and less paid I've had in China. They will take full advantage of you.
