Q: What's the best way to learn Chinese in China? Urgent!

I really want to improve my Chinese level, but I don't know if it's better to enroll in a formal course (like at a university) or just hire a private tutor. Some of my friends have just learned Chinese by practicing with their Chienese friends or by finding a Chinese boyfriend/girlfriend. What's really the best way???????

I would say it's best to use numerous techniques. One is to enrole yourself in full-time classes at a school in China and actually knuckling down and doing all the required study and homework (this method is good for your written and reading comprehension). The second method that should be complemented with the first is to go out and interact with non-English speaking Chinese on a regular basis. Force yourself to speak it and don't get stuck in the expat bubble. Make some Chinese friends or find a boyfriend/girlfriend. This'll improve your spoken in no time.

language exchange is a good choice.

Taking so-call courses waste time and money.

jaffa:

Study abroad. The best way to develop spoken fluency is to immerse yourself completely in the language. Enroll in a university or private language course in China. Ensure you study in one of the large cities or other areas where Mandarin is commonly spoken and not another Chinese dialect. Thanks. Regards, Learn Chinese free

Get a chinese best friend. Although getting a boyfriend/girlfriend would be an excellent way, remember that your partner is probably now thinking about their future, marriage etc. So consider their feelings especially if all you want is just language...

If you're the studying type then lessons are a good way to go because then you feel more confident to speak all the time outside the classroom. This increases your level twofold.

It's all about your deepest desire and power of will than one can get better. Practice when opportunity strike. If it doesn't, then create the opportunity. Study Mandarin, feel Mandarin, think Mandarin until you make one with Mandarin.

maybe you can get a QQ number, the similar like MSN, SKYPE. QQ is popular chatting tool in China. you can chat with many chinese friends by voice or letters

MrTibbles:

QQ shows up as a virus on most western software platforms. It constantly scans your hard drive and send info back to some government controlled office. So does the "tom" version of Skype. While information wants to be free, China doesn't. Don't install this spyware crap unless you like knowing that big Ge Ge is monitoring you every second you are logged on.

Go in a remote area of China, especially a small village, and remain there for one year.
Your Chinese will improve rather quickly Smile
Your health however may get a tough time. Smile

You can practice and use it as much as possible. First try to study online such as a chinese program..there are good free one's that are available. I recently found one that gives you a description of the word, how to write it and how to say it. After you learn as much as possible try to use it as much as you can. I'm trying to improve my chinese as well. Best of Luck! smiley

Hey,
Learning Chinese with a private teacher is better than learning it by yourself.
My bf learning Chinese at Mandarin Garden. It seems good and his Chinese lever  much better than before.
I had been Mandarin Garden for join a free language exchange course before.
It is soo cool. We made a lot of friends there and their professional Chinese teacher practiced Chinese with us.It is much useful. I think Mandarin Garden is the best Chinese School in China.

The best way to learn is through immersion, another words find a teacher and make sure they only speak English if it is absolutely necessary for you to understand.
