Q: What's the deal with all the closed kitchens here?

Do Chinese people just not like open kitchens? Every apartment's kitchen seems to be separate room, makes cooking and entertaining at the same time a pain.

It is that way (since there is no hood exhaust) so fumes, smoke, smells from cooking, and grease do not spread all over the apartment.  Remember here in China, rooms or apartments are rather small.

Try seasoning a wok in an open kitchen without setting off the fire alarms and making your whole house reek. Tongue

As long as the kitchen is not close to the bathroom.  The thing is with the closed kitchen it has to deal with the smoke yes. Also, I agree some apartments are small. Our kitchen has a sliding door  that prevents you from hearing loud noises such as when we are watching a t.v. show in the living room.
