Q: Whats a good TESOL cert. course either online or face to face ?

So I am already in China and perhaps wanting to teach a college next year. Although I am sure I can get a English teaching job at a college without the cert. What's the easiest way to get cert. ? Are there any face to face schools in Central China? How long would a face to face course take? Cost?

indecisionThey do have face to face and they do have online courses. The face to face would be more and you can't really finish the face to face course faster. If you were to take an online school all you have to really do is do all the assignments that they ask of you and then you get your certificate. I got three that were in a bundle package. I got a discount since it was the holidays. You probably want to take advantage of their holiday specials you can save a lot like 60 or 70%.

It's worth it.They will give you a book to complete your course. I don't think the face to face was really necessary. The books will come in handy. I got three one to teach English as a second language, one for teaching children english and a business English book.

Do you want a GOOD course? One that will be useful outside of China (ie, worth more than the paper it's written on)?

Or just a crappy one to get a quick and easy job here - and is worthless outside of China??

(hint: anything online is in the latter category! Same goes for any 'quick' course)

Be aware - even though the quick and easy course will set you up in China, it's not going to take you far - even here. If you want to be a teacher, and make some ok money, then you would be far better advised putting in the time and money into something decent. Otherwise, you'll end up on 5000RMB/month jobs for the rest of your time here... instead of hitting the 15-30K jobs some of us get!

So then what are some examples of good ones? Please post a few links - thanks

As EasyRider said - CELTA! That, and the Trinity TEFL are the only world-wide recognised (instantly) qualifications.

I know CELTA is run once a year at Shanghai Uni in July/August (cos I did mine through there), and they even fly in the teachers from overseas (Australia). I've heard a rumour that there's one available in Beijing... More information is available from the CELTA/Cambridge ESOL website. (with rather obvious website addresses!) The Shanghai course was 4 weeks INTENSIVE stuff!!! (and, while the world's most recognised qualification for TESOL, has FAR too great an emphasis upon the lesson plan and all that crap, that 90% of people will NEVER do in such depth again in their lives!!!) You will NOT have spare time to live the life in SH! If you can find a course over 5+ weeks, do that! (look for Thailand or Vietnam...)

I know nothing about the Trinity, either what they do, or where you can do it... a simple search should answer that for you.

(if you can't do your own research now, you'll struggle on the course!)

They accept pretty much any TESOL/TEFL certificate here, but they most likely won't be usable outside of China/possibly Thailand. Real, professional credentials will net you more money. Shining_brow is spot on.

Get a CELTA if you're looking for a real qualification that will do you favors in the future.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change student visa to labourer one is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
