It doesn't have a big city feel, no sky scrappers, still has lots of old neighborhoods. I find the city has lots of mature trees along roads. I like Guilin more than any city I have been to, but I haven't been to many others.

For foreign ESL teachers it also has seriously low wages as compared to the rest of the country to the supply which far outstrips the demand.
