Q: What's the most you've been ripped off/scammed while in China ?

I'm sure most of us have overpaid for something at some point or another  ( I know I have done this quite often and will continue to do this in certain situations).

What's the most you got ripped off though, maybe not in money value but just a situation where you really should have known better.

For me there was a time where I had to buy some dress shoes for a suit.  I saw some shoes I liked at a store and the price was something like 300rmb (I don't remember the exact price).  When I went to pay they ended up saying 600rmb and when I asked why they said the 300rmb price was for each shoe.   I thought this was silly but I was naive and just though "well I guess that's the way they sell shoes in China".

Later when I told my friends/girlfriend about this I was the laughed at pretty hard and I felt pretty stupid for not using common sense and knowing better..... who in their right mind would buy one shoe, or who would averdtise the sale of just one shoe Smile

What are some of your stories ?

I am a pretty paranoid type, so I always assume that people are out to scam me.  But even with my level of paranoia, I have been taken by a scam or two.  But, the amount was only about 30RMB.

I was outside a restaurant when I was approached by 2 young and decently dressed Chinese girls.  In broken English they told me that they were new to the city, had been ripped off and were looking for some money so they could get something to eat.

They were young and kind of cute, so I gave them 30 RMB.

About a month later I was in a completely different city when 2 different young and decently dressed girls came up to me and gave me the exact same speech word for word that I realized I got scammed by the first pair.

Over my years in China that same scam was tried on me over 20 times in different cities by different groups of girls.  One time by 2 different sets within 4 blocks of each other.

Mr_spoon:

Dude EXACTLY the same thing happened to me in Beijing. Except I told them I was broke, and they got all angry at me.
