Q: What's the one thing foreign tourists do that pisses you off?

Anyone else get really pissed off at tourists from your home country when you spot them in the street here?

The other day a group of Americans was walking down the street, middle of the afternoon, all with a bottle of Qingdao in hand, talking loudly and gulping down their jiu as they walked down the street. Swear to God I felt ashamed of Chinese people associating me with them.

I hate it when foreigners try and talk about politics with local people

1) Its stupid to talk to anyone about politics (especially in another country and even more so with people from a different political system)

2) They think they hold ''all the answers'' and Chinese people have no idea on politics and matters inside and outside of China

3) They have no clue of the political system in China and in most cases its history

....I must say that I’ve noticed this a few times and in those instances the Chinese people involved were very respectful and just quietly listened to what that person 'babbled on about'.

talking politics to a local is like talking to a stray dog, you look crazy, not the dog.

A few things then to place a cloud over my head.

Some are:

1.- when acting like the assholes they are, thinking they only hold the truth and key to being happy.

2.- when refusing to reply to a greeting or a smile, either from a local or another foreigner.

3.- when they "think" they now all the answers, even the date they will die.

Maybe this is why I am sort of becoming a "lonely wolf", and only have a handfull of foreign friends

nevermind:

Uh, that sounds more like the behaviour of a grouchy expat, not a tourist.

When the Chinese scream "Halluuuuuu" in a mocking, high-pitched voice, while talking shit about the foreigners in Chinese, and the tourists say, "Hello" back.

Foreign touris STARES are annoying.

I once went to Mutianyu great wall with family memeber. We just had a sudden decision. Gosh, we got so many stares from various foreign touris that time, it's followed all the way untill we leave the area... It's really annoying!...

nevermind:

Foreign tourists who COME to China would not STARE at Chinese people. You're just saying this cause we always complain about you staring at us. More proof you've never left China. If you had ever been out of China, myfather, you would know that the west is FULL of Asian people. They are nothing new to us.

Localla, there's no way a dude from west BC would stare at an Asian. Sometimes, in your rare moments of lucidity, you are actually a good poster, but then you go on these crazy, insane rants. You've pushed way past the boundaries of your credibility and I don't know why the Chinese insist on doing that with foreigners, but please stop. You'll get banned, and I think if you controlled your temper a bit, and were a bit more open minded, you would really be an interesting person to have around here.

Localla, calling people names in all caps isn't necessary, nor is insulting their ancestors. Being Chinese, I'm pretty sure you knew what you were doing there. Consider that strike number 2. If you are unfamiliar with baseball, look it up.

nevermind and fish79, it seems Localla is allergic to the both of you. Until we get the 'block' option up, please do your best to avoid her.

Lots of young tourists travel 1- several monthes, living in hotel for long time is way too expensive even to majority of office employees who make decent money. Be more open minded, if I travel to Europe for business, like a week, I will get a cozy hotel room or even a 4 star hotel.

But this time I'm going on a 20 days trip, hostel is obviously a better option.

i hate the foreigners that treat every local like shAt for whatever reason. example i was in mcD's and a african guy came in and sat with me. we started talking and the worker was cleanig the table next to us, then he very rudely told her to get him a napkin (in chinese). the dumb fAck would never do that in his own country at mcdonalds. i got up and left after that.

The 'tourists' who only go to western restaurants and only the touristey places - and think they've done something special. This is especially true if you try to get them to do something different (and local), but they refuse to because it's so not what they'd do back home! Or, complain only because it's different (as against, because it actually is bad...). Why the flock would you travel to a different country, if all you want are the things you've got back home???

The ones who just pass judgment on things that do not fit their own code of behavior without at least trying to understand how these behaviors come about. It is mostly to do with one's upbringing, education and obsevance of role models. I think that many people assume that their manners were instinctive and Western people are born that way while Chinese are genetically rude and selfish.

Zethe:

No one thinks that way.
Only Chinese mainlanders would think that "western people" think that way.

This is your insecurity being projected upon others to fit your poor perception of reality.

I have a foreign friend who, when I ask him if he wants to go out to eat, usually replies, "ABC," which means, "anything but Chinese." That seems to be his approach to most everything. Personally, I'm here to experience something different. I've become a hybrid, culturally, in many ways, maintaining the logic and philosophical base of the west, but adapting to eastern aestetics.

As far as tourists, the loud, obnoxios kind really get to me, but usually I ignore them. Also, as already mentioned, the ones who treat local people like they are inferior.

I hate foreigners who come here and make asses of themselves in public because it makes the rest of us look bad. Ex: the American who started a drunken brawl on the Guangzhou metro and got a severe beatdown. It got filmed and put on youku.

Eat the paper on the bottom of the  pastries (Ok I ve done that myself if I had enough to drink). Smile

Mistake the fingerbowl for soup and then after they have consumed it all, remark about how bad or good it was! (OK thats more hilarious than annoying).

PaulMartin has it right on the nose.. Great reply. I'm reading this and all I'm thinking is most would do the same when with friends on vacation.. The one with American guys drinking beers down the street being loud? Come on man stop hating on these people who are just having fun not hurting anyone.. And to the ones that are, EX beatdown guy, he deserved that LOL... Good topic but some of these answers are laughable. To each his own.

Hey I came as tourist. For some reason I was in such a good mood, all I did was laugh and joke. I walked down the street drinking beer, never got drunk. It was hot and humid. When I get something to drink pop is OK maybe once a day and I really hate to pay for water. So drinking beer was a treat. It was so cheap and the fact that I could drink beer on the street was cool. I never even had a little buzz on, never had more that 4 beers in a day tho.
I think I was nice to everyone and met lots that were nice to me, met scammers too. I fell for the tea scam even tho I knew off it. I talked to everyone that had a dog.
One thing I did notice in my pictures was that I never noticed much when I was out with the girl friend. I see in pictures police watching me. At an outside bar I saw white people at table next to me and never even noticed them when I was there. I was preoccupied.Sorry if I didn't say Hi.

I got one.. this really annoyes me. The foreigners that run into a situation they dislike and say "Well, in my country... we don't..."

The foreigners that think they are gods because they got with a ton of Chinese women. Trust me, it's not something to be proud of...

The ones who talk shit about Chinese in English or whatever and think they can't understand. Trust me, a lot of times they DO understand. If you don't like it when they do it to you, don't do it EITHER!

I'm finished.

If that bothers you, how do you survive in China?
I'd say talking loudly and gulping jiu (or anywhere for that matter) is pretty unavoidable in 99% of the country.
