Q: When traveling in China is it okay to just bring photocopy of passport?

Say if you go to another city for the weekend and will be checking into a hotel. Will they accept a photocopy?

When travelling in China, you always need to have your original passport.

If you're resident in one city, you can keep a copy of your passport + copy of your visa.

A few years ago a photocopy would have been ok but now impossible you really need it to do anything, hotels, bus, train, plane tickets, random police checks, etc...

500 rmb fine can be given for not having passport, but international rules of notifying in 72 hours your death or injury to your embassy is the main reason you have to carry it, a dead foreigner without id makes them work to much.

Whomever has time to do that is a serious loser, lol.

Actually, I have traveled on a color photocopy a few times w/o problem only because I lodged with friends on my trips.  Should you over night in a hotel/hostel then you do need your pp b/c the establishment must record your visa number in addition to your pp number.  Good luck.
