Q: where is the best place on earth to retire and drink beer?

#1 beer

#2 internet access

#3 safety

#4 food and water available

#5 electricity Maybe overlap with (#2)

#6 affordable on a pension

I might have already found it. But I am always OK to try another adventure.

seems bahamas meets the criteria

retiredinchina:

bahamas imports most all of their food, quite expensive, single person about 2000 dollars a month, couple on 2500 combined income possible.

curious, poland would be great, but Greece, not sure long term, if Turkey becomes hard line Islam after this fake coup, Greece will be attacked like France, this is probably 5 years away though. It depends on how long it takes in Turkey to kill all the Christians and reformers and consolidate their power, then they go for Greece.

safety is related to your mobility, how much you travel at your retirement area.

Thailand was OK, philppines was good, panama is getting worse, ecuador if china does not work out in the future.

Scams and thieves in Thailand and the Philippines is why I'm in China. Beating people up just gets boring when you get older and the younger crooks are so stupid, it's embarrassing.

I have a friend who says Columbia now has a stable government with the drug cartel leaders dead or moved to Mexico and the economy is improving, hope he is right, most beautiful women in the world there.

BHGAL:

thanks for the response.   I have had Uruguay on my radar for a long time..  Paraguay maybe but  really prefer close to the sea. s/e asia has always been a dream like life for me....  thailand first time in 1983....  before aids for christs sake...    but while I am am still a little delusional  ..  Thailand, done, Malaysia, done, Philipines, done, China done.  vietnam or laos cambodia maybe, but I guess I am looking for change, something different. and these places, well I get bored.   I think they call it attention deficit disorder (ADD) nowadays...I just want a semi- long term cheap adventure.

and as of today, I am very mobile personaly, but one of the biggest reasons I chose China (5 years ago) was the lack of guns. I am a little white guy .. there are some places on earth I would love to go, but chicken shit for my life... no intentions or hopes of getting shot in a bar in Colombia (yes the girls are famous) Africa and South America .... hmm, maybe Bali?

I always check escapeartist.com and overseas living for research, also craigslist can give you an idea of cost.

I have a friend who also lives just South of San Diego along the beach in Mexico, 2 bedroom is about 300 dollars "playas beach", he actually teaches in San Diego, many retirees and blue collar live in the area, Safety in numbers and the area is watched closely by Mexico for the sake of the tourist dollars. They have a post office at the border crossing for his mail and 50 cent bus ride from the beach to the border. I have stayed there for a week and craigslist has some posting for it under tijuana.

bhgal, if you can swing 1500 dollars a month income, this place meets everything on your list, the crime rate is so low, statistically it is in fractions, http://www.liveandinvestoverseas.com/lifestyle/ljubljana-slovenia-haven-for-retirement.html

SLOVENIA, best part is your close to anyplace on 3 continents for travel.

I would recommend New Zealand but the progressives there are restricting development and limiting building permits like California and the housing costs will blow the budget of 400 a week for seniors retiring there wide open within a decade. A person might be able to live retired there on 400 a week now, but that is disappearing fast if you want urban living.

Curiousdude:

ric, slovenia looks excellent. for me a minor deterrant is tht its landlockd (koper bein' only small coastal part). othrwise 8/10.

Everywhere sucks. Why go someplace far away to die, why not just stay home and die there?  This way, there won't be too much of a hassle for your family to collect your corpse.

retiredinchina:

Family is in an anchor that keeps everybody controlled, just like the government. Screw controls, throw the ball and chain away and enjoy your life, the idea of living an dying in the same place when this world was made for all men and women, not for me, I intend to see as much of it as possible.

Have another friend who has been living in Cape Verde for a year and loves it, except occasional language problems, the younger folks speak English but sometimes a problem with over 40 crowd.

Playboy mansion would be nice but I doubt that falls into the affordable category.

Curiousdude:

it was recently sold. http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/2016/06/06/playboy-mansion-sold-neighbor/85513642/

The Philippines is pretty good. Not all of it... but places like "Coron" may be a good option. Little to no crime at all, and the people there are very nice and it is still in a sort of developmental stage that keeps the costs down.

Thailand has better food than the Philippines and maybe a good place to retire would be in the small town of "Pai" north of Chiang Mai

Would Chile be a good choice? Maybe Argentina?

The Philippines. I lived there for years. Loved it. Brotherly hood life style at its best.

retiredinchina:

I did love the Philippines. If you stay away from tourists bars in major cities that draw out thugs and hustlers, its pretty safe. If you live like a nomad and keep down the materialism, its a nice place. If you keep nice things, the weather could blow all your junk away anytime with a storm or flooding, so you need to know the history of the area or go high rise and urban living.

I prefer Mexico, b/c I have sojourned there twice for many months and really like what I see. Sure, it gets alot of bad press, especially from US news media outlets but I never had any problems from criminals (but I have had a bit of problems from the federalas Police that haunt the highways waiting to pounce on international passerby. plenty of different beer types, and a wide variety of cuisine. Also, the silver mining cities of zacatacas, taxco, and gunaguato to name a few are "Euro feeling", since they have many cobblestone streets.

Cuba!    just now looks like opening up!

I went there off the radar (I'm a US guy) many years ago.  Loved it!  Habana just had some cool architecture and I liked how it was stuck in time.  Then I went down to some beach resort,, can't remember the name,,, had a blast there too.  the went to Isla de la Juventud...  wow,,, such a original place,,, like fell of the world's radar screen so long ago,,, or for Isla,, maybe never was on the radar...  met a girl there,,,  my goodness.  If I was smart back then I would've found a way to marry her.

But I also suggest to hurry up and grab a piece of Cuba b4 it's opening up ruins the place as Big Biz sets in.

Croatia should be fine. Many interesting places to see, nice, warm climate, clean sea nearby. Besides, it's close to Greece, Italy. However, in the long run, due to the influx of migrants from Turkey safety may be a problem.
