I see a lot of people wearing cheap pollution masks on the street, but is there any place in Beijing where I can find masks that actually work and comply to the western standards?

Hi Erokse. I bought one at Natooke on Wudaoying Hutong next to the lama temple recently. It's a "Respro" face mask that was made in the UK and filters PM2.5. It was expensive though--a little under 400 RMB. I used it for bike riding last weekend and it worked pretty well.
There was an article published on this site a while back which I used to research it: http://news.echinacities.com/detail/65556-Waiting-to-Exhale-Guide-to-Buy...
I think the sell some at NLGX in Nanlouguxiang. Check there. If you can't find anything, there are masks available at pharmacies, they look like the surgical ones.
here u go, get it online bro

I would recommend getting a 3M N95 mask, they filter out PM2.5 and are fairly cheap. You can get them for 30RMB per a mask or 200RMB for 10 from the PureLiving China office at:
Suite 7508, 5/F
Hongtian Business Center
5 XiangJunNanLi, East Third Ring Road
Chaoyang District, Beijing 100020

If you are concerned with pollution and your health, you should also consider testing your home. People feel like they need to protect themselves when they are outside but don't care when they're indoors, which is where you spend 90% of your time and the air can be nearly as detrimental. Surgical masks are useless against photochemical smog. Probably the cheapest mask that will work is a charcoal filtered spray painters mask. Should be able to get one at a auto body paint suplyer. Franck3
