1.- LE REXO for some custom made furniture.
Really good work, very good quality and very reasonable prices.
I wanted modern style chinese furniture, and i am 100% satisfied with the result.
Located on 696 WeiHai road (between North Maoming road and North Shanxi road), buidling 1, showroom 103 (www.lerexo.com)
I'll definitely recommend that place, and will go back there soon.
2.- There is a place on Zizhong lu right off the Dongtai lu antique market. Can't find the card right now but it is a small place right near the corner of Dongtai with Zizhong.
3.- 696 WeiHai lu, turn left as soon as you can and go to the end.
4.-Hong Qiao Road, not far from the Shanghai Blood Center (near Yan'an Road, but not quite that far). No longer have the contact information but the man was from HK and had set up shop a few years before. He speaks English and does beautiful work for reasonable rates. There are a number of workshops in that area, perhaps having a walk through will help locate him or another craftsman. You can find the basic area by all the signs that say "Antiques". Many of the building fronts were recently refurbished, but each alley had two to three workshops.
There is another shop off of Wusong Road that did great work for some screens I had made two years ago.

To the OP, the suggestions above are quite good IMHO. Nonetheless, somehow, somehow I believe that custom-made Chinese furniture in Shanghai will be dreadfully, dreadfully expensive.
In the past, I have ordered some custom-made items through taobao from a manfacturer in Fujian. Just search Chinese traditional furniture on taobao and you will be surprised what it turns up. I would venture that prices on taobao for the items hand made in Fujian are probably at least 40% less, if not more, than comparable items in Shanghai, shipping charges included.

I travel to Shanghai June this year, it is hot and humid. I like the shop of chinese antique furniture (sorry I don't know the name but i know the owner's cell phone 13621990301 or 13901685220 email:shanghaifurniture@hotmail.com) located in surburb of shanghai city named as qingpu district. (on the western direction of hongqiao airport) so not too far from American School Puxi Section.
And they have full range of chinese antique furniture in their warehouse display, and ready for sell. you could point out which one you like to buy, and negotiate with the owner about prices you can accept.
They use Elm wood and they have several wood finishes/ colors to choose from (all nice looking, not the cheap sh1t). The style is more traditional than other shops we have been to, but the quality is WAAAY better.
They have their own factory ( not so far away) and they have a catalog of stuff they can do for you. they do speak english BUT I think you will be please with the quality of their stuff. Prices are reasonable (not cheap) but not crazy either.
