Q: Which is bigger, Xmas or Spring Festival, judged by the amount of crap on sale in super markets.

The last couple of days I've been in AEON, Carre Four and Vanguard. I was in all of them also before Xmas. AEON's section of red crap to use for decoration is identical in terms of sqrmtr allocation. But Vanguard and Carre Four seems to spend less space on selling crap to people with money to burn.

A couple of years ago, the amount of sqrmtr used for Spring Festival was about the same as it is today, but Xmas has grown a lot.

Is Xmas the bigger commercial success ?

I suppose it's Xmas is bigger in Beijing and particularly Shanghai given the number of expats there. I'm in Guangzhou and Xmas is pretty much muted although we can see that it's catching on. So, depending where you are in China, Spring Festival is still bigger. Also, people don't get holidays for Xmas, but for Spring Festival, the whole of China is on holiday. All dept stores seem to promote Spring Festival much more than Xmas.
