Q: Which phone provider do you use? Best for smart phones?

A friend visiting from back home just gave me an old iPhone 4 (in exchange for housing him and showing him around). I was previously using a "dumb" phone on China Mobile so I didn't much care about network speeds. Now I am looking at getting a data plan and would like to know if its worth leaving for one of the other companies or if China Mobile is okay. Thanks.

The company I work for gave me a phone with a China Mobile SIM when I arrived in China; It was the cheapest phone you could probably buy and I quickly replaced it. I can't really vouch for China Mobile because I haven't really been using their service.

I've been with China Unicom for a year now and they are quite reliable; I think they offer the fastest 3G service and if you use your phone internationally, it is usually more convenient to get China Unicom since technology in most smartphones is the same abroad. Nevertheless, It is my opinion that China Unicom's network has a lot of weak/blind spots; and losing signal is something quite annoying that happens to me everyday (Using International Samsung Galaxy Note II).

China Telecom is a lot more reliable but not as fast (although not sure by how much). Their internet 3G plans are much cheaper than China Mobile and China Unicom too (in Beijing that is). The drawback is that China Telecom uses CDMA for its 2G and CDMA2000 for its 3G which is not compatible with all phones nor abroad.

If you already have and plan to use the iphone 4, then I'd advise China Unicom too.

I'm personally changing to China Telecom because I'm an internet Junkie (Skype/voip) and because I cannot stand to lose network connectivity all the time.

Hope that helps!

CHINA UNICOM, they provide best packages and the 3G is pretty fast.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
