Q: Which southeast asian countries are 'dangerous' for an American citizen?

Considering going on a trip during October break. I heard Myanmar was currently hit with massive ethnic violence, and over 60 people were killed just in the month of June...so that pretty much cancels that one out.

Are there any other southeast asian countries one would not recommend going to for safety reasons? Is Cambodia safe? I heard it's the most corrupt country in the world...

You certainly need to keep your wits about you in Cambodia, but I travelled there by myself and had no problems. It's a beautiful country and I found the people lovely. Yes it's hugely corrupt, even the most blind tourist could see that. Sooooo many big black Lexus SUVs cruising on streets that show the worst obvious poverty I've seen. I was left absolutely disgusted by their government, but in awe of the average Cambodian person's ability to survive and adapt.

I wouldn't rule out Burma because of safety concerns. Tourists are only allowed into some states of the country and are not allowed into areas with strong seperatist movements. I'd say your chances of being caught up in violence are practically zero.

But do lots of research if you're planning to go to Burma. Countries like Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and even Indochina to a lesser degree, you can just rock up at the airport (visas req for Vietnam) with one night accommodation organised, figure it all out as you go along and have an awesome time. It's not the same with Burma, there' a fairly unique situation there and one you really need to know about before going.

Those 2 countries would pose no more threat to Americans that they would to people from other western countries.
