Q: Who and What Are You?
There is a forum member who constantly attempts to belittle other forum members. This person employs passive-aggressive behavior on almost every occasion. As such, I thought to ask a few questions:
Who, and what are you? Do you really know yourself? Are you doing what you're doing on your own merit or are you a boot-licking sycophant?
Do you live in an ivory tower and look down on others or can you understand the circumstances, limitations and motivations that bring others here (China and the forums), keep them here, and empathize with them?
Do you understand that your outlook and experiences are not the same as others?
Do you believe that others have their right to their opinions and, unless they're an obvious troll, they're entitled to post them without disparagement?
It has been my experience in China (15 years) that expats come here to escape the drudgery of a 40+ hour workweek and "paying lip-service to the 'man.'" Do you condone becoming another drone and perpetuating the very practices that you railed against and reviled in your home country?

I dont look down on many especially those that truly know themselves. But yeah i do have a problem with useless tits like you. This is exactly why i keep running into the same 4 or 5 tools yet largely get on well with everyone else. You missunderstand my looking down on you as a financial thing, when its not. Corporate jobs can be really stimulating and challenging. I do a lot of analytics and excel dashboard-type stuff and I find it really interesting. It's fun problem solving. My boss likes me because i'm good at my job and have a good attitude in general.
It's really good to try and learn from people who are where you want to go. My boss is a pretty solid guy...I want to be VP someday and there's a lot I can learn from someone who is a VP. I'm lucky to have someone willing to mentor me, and I'm an eager protege.
That must make me a real piece of shit, right? People like me and mike and RobK as well fought to carve out something good for ourselves here, instead of settling for falling ass-backwards into automatic ESL jobs. I'm hoping to take my skills back home to a solid position in the next 12 months.

I know I'm possibly in the minority, but that's what I did... and many a person has said they're 'proud' of me, or 'admire' me for doing so. It has given me the chance to inspire other people to do something similar with their lives
So, grouping all ESL teachers into the 'loser' category is offensive...

@shining...well you're right that was offensive and I apologize for the wording.
But it's true that it IS pretty much an automatic job to get. You don't have to pound the pavement send out a million resumes, network like crazy and deal with constant stress/disappointment just trying to get into entry level job in a crowded marketplace. There IS a teaching job for every native speaker here who wants one...and then some. The bar is set pretty low, and with free housing, utilities out of your name etc. you can be pretty irresponsible and still keep your job.
That doesn't mean you can't do it well and that doesn't mean that you can't own it and make it into something respectable for yourself.
But it does mean it'll take all comers, and that the ceiling for where you can go with it is gonna be fairly low, though better than some alternatives.
It's just not for everyone...you chose it, you like it that's awesome.

Your quote from a previous time proves you simply can't believe that one could earn such an income. It simply can't exist because they are too busy. That's where you are inferior, if you had worked hard... and taken action, rather than sat around thinking you were so smart (trust me I used to do this) you would understand that you start to get amazingly good at what you do, you also learn to delegate tasks and expand. This leaves you with more free time and bigger rewards.

In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with having a big ego and taking pride in what you do and sharing it with others. The only problem is if your ego gets in the way of your self-reflection and development.
Sinobear my 32 years of experience on planet Earth states that almost EVERYONE is trying to put you down or doesn't care if you succeed or fail (most people WANT you to fail so they can feel good about their lives). Sinobear you strike me more of a pompous ass than Mike.
He is a passionate person that comes off as being a dick (which is partially necessary to brush aside all the naysayers), but you just seem like a dick starting up this "passive-aggressive" attack and pretending like you are the better man for "being thy self".

Umm...a contribution. I'm not an ambitious person...that is, in respect to money and power.
Enough is enough for me. Honestly. So, making a living and having a free and easy lifestyle is right up my alley. Teaching English in China provides just such this opportunity.
Alas, the tradeoff is living in a filthy, backward and racist environment where there's nothing to do other than love family and beer. And work, such as it is.
But this just makes the annual month or so back home all the more a time to cherish.
Point taken. Actually the "condescending gloaters" might save that for other forums. There is one called Wall Street Oasis that might be more suitable for such "ambitious" types. Lots of accomplished yet modest people on that or similar forums, and maybe it'd help chop your egos down to size.

china can be an ok place to take it easy...though I would imagine Thailand, Indonesia or the Philippines to be better for that. But not everybody just wants to take it easy, that life isn't for everyone.
If you're happy with it...be happy for others who succeed at building something else. If you aren't happy with it, figure out what you have to do to get where you want to be.

Well as sinobear noted there is a line between healthy pride and becoming full of oneself and condescending.
I remember well a fellow from my uni days, he came from a wealthy/powerful old family and had that clear "type A" or "executive" personality, ambitions, etc., and was talented (paid off 4 years tuition working on side as a 18-year-old freshman), but managed to remain down-to-earth and yet larger-than-life at once. That's respectable, and another one that comes to mind is comp. sci. professor I had, a noted leader in the field and had a presumably very a well-paid Friday consulting gig with Microsoft, but also had the down-to-earth-ness that I've come to associate with genuine brilliance. So it's possible to be "successful" and not let it go to one's head.
As Kurt Vonnegut said, "we're here to fart around, don't let anyone tell you otherwise."

Agree with your assessment. I talked about that a little bit in my blogs; that bored, marginalized smart people aren't the best to hang around with.
There's a big difference between being smart and being talented. Smart is something you can be, talented is something you can do. It's why a structural engineer gets a lot of respect and people will readily defer to their intelligence and expertise, while an opinionated hipster (even one with a 150 IQ) who works at a coffee shop can come off as undeservedly smug even for saying the EXACT SAME THING as the engineer.
The world isn't fair, on some level people are judged by the rarity of their accomplishments because we don't live in a vacuum. Smart only counts if you do something special with it, otherwise you're just the jerk at the coffee shop babbling about some obscure fact that anyone could have learned.
Narcissism and being an ass use to be traits to be ashamed of and not proudly proclaimed from the hills. It is too bad that some people can’t be successful and humble as well. Times they are a changin I guess. As for myself I do well enough but I refuse to let it go to my head, because those who become too full of themselves will always be brought to heel. It is a law of the universe.

The rest of the world wars over religion and ethnics, so lets bring a bit of everything home. Groups are pushing for Islamic laws in Canada etc and there is too much reverse discrimination. Too wordy by far, and none of it it relevant to anyone but yourselves. You both lose in terms of respectability. All because you're both better at picking fights than you are at settling them.
If I had to pick a side, I'd go with Sinobear. I know mike's tone of discourse, so I imagine he's the aggressor, and that would make Sinobear the defender. But it's still bad form on both sides to bite down so deeply in people's personal sitiation. Bad dogs! Heel!

Seems to me the reason he only received a paltry 24 upvotes by May 4th is that the show kinda petered out.
Disappointing really, esp after start an explosive beginning.
