Q: Who else has a dislike of Pandas?

The recent article about the panda in the zoo annoyed me. I am unsure why but I seem to just get annoyed or even angry whenthinking about pandas. Of course when a Chinese person asks me if I like Pandas and I say no they seem horrified. Does anyone else dislike pandas or am I just a panda racist. This article is semi serious and not a weird troll attempt.

ME! Pandas suck! they're lazy and stupid and are basically a lame version of bears.

Unfair! Herbivores have a low metabolism, and the list of animals that won't reproduce in captivity is endless. Even in the wild, their low numbers make it difficult to mate, because it's hard to find them. And with the adundance of humans everywhere, it's no wonder they avoid each other even when they do have an encounter. To think they wouldn't reproduce under natural circumstances is oxymoronic: If you believe that, you're an ox and a moron! They existed for millions of years before we came along, and the whole idea of evaluating an endangered species based on its charisma is offensive to me.

As a biologist, I appreciate Pandas as a unique offshoot of bears. They're one of the few Carnivora who can digest plants as their staple diet, and high-cellulose bamboo at that. What's even more amazing, is that they've developed a 6th digit to grasp the bamboo they eat. If you know a bit about anatomy and evolution of mammals, you'll find that skeletons usually degenerate; bones are rarely adapted to improve with an extra function. They're unique and special creatures, and it's sad that these genetically unique bears depend on such a fragile, shrinking habitat. Given the Chinese people's consideration of animals and nature preservation, I doubt they'd still exist without a concerted effort by government and media to deify them as a national animal. As for your irritation: It's just a reaction towards the blind nationalist adoration. Don't blame the pandas. They'd much rather be chomping wild bamboo and fornicating where you'd never find them, than being hand-fed their pre-peeled bamboo shoots by VIPs while watching Panda Porn and getting jacked off by a zoo intern.
Note to the wise: Don't google "Panda Porn"

I appreciate your detailed answer. Like most of your posts it is detailed and well thought. I suspect it is the Chinese reaction to pandas that pushes me in the direction of disliking them. I also think it is to do with the fact they get an unfare share of the funds for conservation, again not their fault. Perhaps one day I can overcome my irrational dislike of pandas.

I thought that where they originally came from there was no bamboo. Isn't this a diet foisted on them?

Not to my knowledge. I doubt it's possible, either. Their skeletal and digestive evolution gives enough evidence that they've adapted to eating bamboo.

Pandaism - awesome
Vegetarianism - blows chuncks

Teach the cuddly fellas to eat proper food. The grizzly gets a lot of its awesomenes from its fishing skills.

coineineagh:

Get a Panda seriously annoyed, and you'll find out the hard way that it's reflexes, claws and canines are fully functional in a pinch. They'l eat meat; they just prefer bamboo. Chinese meat will instill an appreciation for veggies in anyone ;)

It's true Scandanavian, they do occasionally eat meat. There is even a story on this site about a panda killing a farmers lamb. It talks about how the farmer kept a respectful distance. This part annoyed me too. If it was a dog or wolf the farmer would have got his friends and beat the animal to death. I am not saying he should have killed the panda. I love animals in general I just find it annoying that Chinese people generally treat all animals like shit except for pandas.

Think of Panda just as an animal you would love it. Your problem is you hate Panda because Chinese like it. I have never seen someone to put himself down to a position where he would even dislike the animals of a country he/she dislikes.

Lord_hanson:

There are plenty of Chinese animals I like, tigers for example. I just think pandas are over rated.

Pandas needed to be overrated, to get the message through to Chinese people's thick skulls that they're NOT FOOD. Tigers can be bred in captivity, as the recent quangdong tiger meat market raid illustrated. And there are different races of tiger: Bengal, Siberian, Sumatran, etc. There's just one species of Panda, and its habitat is only in China. CCP chose well to make it the one and only Chinese national animal.

In my early years, my parents were bound to buy so-called "bush meat", which is meat from the bush. They never got to know which animal it was butchered. Steam boiled for a few hours with plenty of herbs, obviously.

I've never eaten any meat from an endangered animal that I know of, but I have eaten some pretty odd things in Asia, or at least odd to me! So, it would not surprise me that some people (cough, cough) would be able to find Panda on the menu in Western China. It's good for your reproductive health, right ?

Pandas are too stupid to still be a species. Do you not think that any species that requires that much help to reproduce shouldn't still be here?

coineineagh:

How about the fruit and veggies we eat? I believe the majority of tomatoes on the planet are basically clonal shoots derived from the same 9 plants, and their reproduction is very difficult, and also unwelcome for the farmers who are happy with the agriculturally productive plants they're cloning. It's a result of human influence, as is the panda's hampered reproduction due to captivity, shrinking habitats and sparse population. I'd say a species that's aware it is poisioning its own habitat, has the means to cooperate and counteract it, but is too set in its ways, should have its right to exist questioned even more than pandas.
