If your staying nine days expect to book a hotel which is gonna be a set price and it depends where you will stay at. After that figure out your expenses food, transportation, gifts souvenirs etc., Find a cost that is around your budget and try not to go over that budget. You can figure per day you could spend between 30 to 100 dollars on food. Transportation depending on the city you would have to use public transport or rent an automobile. That can cost as low as 10 dollars a day depending on how many sites and places you want to go to in a given day!

There is no way you will spend the equivalent of $ 100 US dollars per day on food in Shanghai, unless you go to a 5 star hotel restaurant and ask for a steak and french wine.  Otherwise, that figure is hogwash !.  enlightened

You can get a room at 2 to 3 star hotels for somewhere between 100 and 150 yuan per day.  Check Agoda to identify hotels, addresses and price ahead of time.

Locally, I can have breakfast, lunch and supper daily at small neighborhood restaurants for under 100 yuans per day.  A good fry noodle dish here sells for 7 to 10 yuan, depending on location.  If you drink coffee, buy a jar of instant coffee, and avoid asking for it elsewhere.

And the rest will depend on what you wish to do.  It is impossibloe for me to give you an exact figure because I have no idea of your idea of a good time.

But for one week, I will budget 150 yuan per day for hotel, 100 yuan per day for food, and that will be 1750 yuan.  Add to that transportation each day, entrance fees to local attractions you wish to visit, and beer tab if any is planned.  I would say for 3,000 yuan you will have a nice time, for 4,000 yuan you may get a massage or two !

If you are willing to actually see the true China and explore to see how normal people live, then Happy's numbers are what you are should expect.

If you are going to be one of the normal tourist that only stay in the nice hotel in the touristly areas and eat in the same areas at places that specialize in serving laowai...  Then 100 even 200 RMB can be expect for a single person for a single meal.  Even the cheaper places in the touristy areas can cost you 400-500 RMB.

You throw in souvenir shopping, bar tap, and taxi/ attraction fees and you can easily spend just as a normal city is the west.
