Q: Who's already being affected by the new social insurance law?

For those that don't know what I'm talking about, it's about having every foreigner (except Germany and Korea) working in China to play into the social insurance. The changed the law last October and it took effect in July, but of course it's not an instant change. So who's already loosing money to this? They "say" we'll be getting some medical coverage and could possibly get the retirement fund money back when we leave (but I'll believe this when I see it).

You will have indeed a "medical coverage", but not in your hospital of your dream. By "medical coverage" is the same kind of coverage as Chinese people get: making line for hours to get a get a number, if you're sick and need to be hospitalized you'll be with 6-8 other people and nobody taking care of you.

As for the retirement fund money, I cannot yet confirm it, but my wife (Chinese) told me that when we're going back home next year, she can take it back.

By the way, the new social insurance law had even more consequences on Chinese who don't have the Shanghai hukou (here in Shanghai). Now, they pay the same amount as Shanghainese people (which can rise from RMB 800 to RMB 5000 difference) and some company doesn't want to afford the new cost for the employees, so they have to pay by themselves.
