Q: Why are Chinese people so comfortable talking about bodily functions?
I do not want to hear about what a good bowel movement you just had?! A friend of mine recently excused herself from a party complaining of "loose bowels" and everyone nodded in understanding and waved her on her way. I only knew the word for loose bowels because it was the very first word in my Chinese text book chapter on health.
EW! What gives? I know that Chinese people show that they care about one another by displaying an inordinate amount of concern about one another's health but is a description of what goes on in your bathroom really necessary?

Hey...I have never had a normal crap in China....I think it is a good thing to discuss. Maybe I need to eat more rice? 
Maybe they don't mind because constant diarrhea is common in China.

About 3 weeks ago I had a student in his early 30s who started sobbing when his fellow student (in a class of two) asked a question about masturbation. True story. The question came out of the blue and from it I deduced that 50% were comfortable talking about bodily functions.

In the land of the dysfunctional, perhaps it is ironic that a lot is said about something that is actually functional.
Because they are gross in general. We in the western world have widened the gap between human and feral animal, through use of manners, etiquette, etc. Here in China, they don't share the same sensibilities. Go to any canteen and you'll notice it's more like "feeding" than "dining", the slurping, belching, juices dribbling down the chin... it's a real appetite killer
Westerners are too uptight about bodily functions.
I answered this over 4 years ago as a newbie...now I talk about having an awesome crap to friends back home.
China will do that as I only had 2 solid normal shits in 3 years in China.
The factory boss would regularly bust a fart during meetings with 10+ people and no one would bat an eyelash...in fact he would do it mid sentence and continue as nothing happened.
Shit happens...what's wrong with sharing??
Especially in China when you have to try hard to start a conversation with the locals..
my dumps have been quite "coily" regular for days now...... diet and exercise.
liar I am, wife has been away for a while, and eating my own cooking....... damned if I know what she cooks with, delicious I know.... healthy?? I do not know.
we got more spices and sauces and bottles of stuff than I ever had back home....all in the cupboard, few in the little fridge.
Frankly speaking, I would rather hear about somebody having a good dump than some of the other poop that comes out of the mouth of many Chinese!
My wife always asks how my bm is - I figured pictures tells the story and started taking pics and sending to her - no more questions about it now
