Q: Why are Chinese so short sighted?

This is referring to mainland Chinese. But I was discussing with a buddy how Chinese can't see very far into the future.

Here are a few examples:

- Chinese ESL employers usually have a good thing going with their foreign teachers, then they decide to screw it up with creating problems for no reason and hiring the cheapest and under qualified staff... usually resulting in financial problems and the place closing down... so why can't they learn from other training center's failures? Why screw up their own business? Many other Chinese companies do this too.

- Why do Chinese get into accidents while driving and then continue the same damn method of driving after it has been resolved (if they live of course). Why don't they learn to NOT cut people off? Why don't the people on bikes/ebikes/etc. learn to not run red lights? Do they think they are immortal?

- Problem prevention is another huge issue. Chinese very rarely take measures to prevent problems before they occur they other try to resolve them (and usually very poorly at that) afterward. Why don't they learn from the first time a problem had occurred? Don't they realize less problems mean less stress and higher productivity?

This part of Chinese unculture is very difficult for me to grasp because it goes against TWO of their other main systems. That is the worship of money (you can make more if you do things right) and the idiotic system of "face", when it constantly loss by acting like a lobotomized monkey.

Is this because Mao culled most of the intelligent people of China during the cultural revolution? Is China just the mysterious land of constant contradictions? Can Chinese not see past the smog?

Starving farmer syndrome - no ability to think ahead when you're worried about where your next meal will come from and no reason to consider anyone else when you're fighting for your own bread. No need to worry about possible future problems when the present situation is so precarious.  Unselfishness and planning ahead require a certain minimal sense of safety and security with the immediate present. Despite China's rapid development, far too many people still have this simplistic short sighted mentality. It's largely a byproduct of Maonutrition I'd say.

Robk:

This makes sense and was my main conclusion.

However, you would think that China would change their education system to include such things as global manners, analytical thinking etc, now that China has risen in living standards significantly.

Mate, it's the 64 dollar question.

I think it's because they are dumb and selfish.  And because they are so dumb they don't get to figure a way out of it.

If some radical does start to put two and two together they are promptly harmonized.

xinyuren:

I think this conclusion is too simplistic.  A whole society of dumb people?  Not only simplistic, but also highly insulting and unnatural.

Yeah, I agree it is due to little or no cognitive mental activity. Education goes a long way and the CCP seems to prefer livestock to humans.

It seems that some types of thinking is a learned process.  Perhaps analytical thinking is crowded out by the rote learning process.  After all, if you are only required to memorize answers for an exam and not allowed to question teachers, doesn't that just make you a walking hard drive?  I really think that is the key here.  Chinese education process is so different from any other I have ever seen.  It must have a significant influence on a child's analytical skills.  Why plan anything if everything is already laid out for you, even your future career.  Have you ever spoken to high school graduates and even university students about their career plans?  Very few have thought seriously about them.  Very curious.

I was teaching a lesson yesterday (this actually happens everyday). And I was teaching different ways to say so, as ..

"It was raining outside so I decided to stay home."

"I decided not to go to the bank as it was raining."

These werethe examples I gave

Her example, "I went outside for a walk as it was raining outside."

I verified that she understood what she was saying.

But this is China's problem, no ability to make logical conclusions. Thay are incapable of processing things and developing their own thoughts.

this reminds me of every fight I ever have with my girlfriend (she is Chinese).  She gets angry at me and wants me to say sorry.  I ask her why she is angry so I can not do, whatever I did again, and not make her angry again.  Instead she demands I say sorry, and the viscous cycle continues ,

Robk:

Yeah, that's not just Chinese... that's women in general lol.

They want you to figure out the complex mysterious puzzle that is them. It makes them feel unique, loved and cherished.

However... a lot of Chinese women take it much further and act more like daughters than wives with their immaturity. Take it from me, if she is emotional... there is no logic. Don't even try. Her brain will not want to compute a foreign language... let alone sense. Just make her feel better quickly or leave her alone until she snaps out of it lol.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
