Q: Why are fireworks so expensive?

You'd think with the millions of fireworks being bought and set off over CNY that they'd be cheaper. But they're pretty expensive. We bought 4 big ones for RMB 250 each. How can so many people afford them? Or is it just priorities?!

Fireworks sell well only during Spring Festival. Other than that, they are used when people get married. Letting off more fireworks during Spring Festival ensures better luck, wealth, fortune and above all, more face. So the bigger the bang, the bigger the face. It's a Chinese thing. Even if they have to spend a small fortune they would do it. Besides the fireworks retailer has only got that many days to sell in quantities. So for either side, it's a bigger bang for their bucks!

I am sure the fireworks exist in different qualities, Two-fitty for four bangs sound like some laowei-discount could also be involved. I am sure a lot of the smoke and noise comes from dirt cheap crap that is more likely to blow up the people igniting it that to light the smoggy night sky.

But as lousiprechau says, it is a matter of priorities, just like all the expensive cars. And maybe having the bigger bang buys you face. I could also imagine that some people get fireworks as gifts from emplyers.

But yeah, and some of the people are lugging around fireworks batteries the size of a fridge, you know, 4 people to carry ONE piece of fireworks. Must cost at least a small fortune.

We paid 250 for a biggish box of about 12-16 shots. But the price is printed on the package, by the manufacturer so it costs the same for everyone. Just found it pretty steep and then seeing SO many being lit, wondering where they get all the money. But ya, it's their priority I guess..

wow,,,,  the street vendor ones late night here in SZ are friggin' cheap.  1 kuai for all the cheap little stuff, 5 for a string of the regular fire-crackers and 10 rmb gets a pretty decent cannon...  can't imagine the bang one would get for 250!

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
