When it comes to their talent, stature, ...etc alot of them seem to see themselves as misunderstood genuises. It's like nothing I've ever seen. Look how many are "freelance journalists" or "making a documentary" or "starting a record label" or "consultants" or some other BS job title they made up for themselves.
I've even met some who have little experience in my industry who actually try to tell me how to do my job because they have a tiny bit of experience in a Chinese company doing the same thing and none back in their home countries. State media is another great example. How many people working for Xinhua or CCTV have you met who act like they're hotsh1t, but have never held a journalism postion in a real organization?
Another one was I once had to go to an English language commercial shoot for work. The guy doing it was a complete ass. Acting like he was the greatest in his field, but the end result was on par with a College film program project. He was also very unprofessional compared to when I did this back home, frankly, if it were up to me I would have fired him.
Another good one is English teachers in fly-by-night schools who think they're on par with English teachers at an international school or something.
Is it just desparation?
Why? Because we can...
We're in a country that lets us live fairy tale/ rockstar lifes just because we don't look Chinese. A nobody can come here and say he's somebody and millions of people will accept it openly without a second thought.
Plus it's just fun to be a kid again and play pretend.
nevermind:
Maybe so, but they shouldn't get upset when someone smacks some reality into them.
DaBen:
Well how happy would 5 year old you be if I walked up and said "You're not really a cowboy in outer space".... see it's not much fun huh
I just made my secretary cry because I said some truth to her about my wages and how i don't give a shit about this job and how i refuse to work overtime for free....
I don't like foreigners who come here and strut like they're hotsh*t when they're losers at home. What I mean by losers is that they're un popular, unsuccessful, and unattractive and then they come to China and all of a sudden they think they're somebody important. It changes people sometimes and I've met numerous expats who, if they acted in their home countries the same way they do in China, they would have gotten the thrashing of a lifetime.
DaBen:
Well back home they just shake their heads in shame. Does that count? But it wasn't China that changed me, I've always been this messed up and learned a long time ago to not believe half the stuff that comes out of my mouth.
Humility does not exist in China.
The biggest moron at home can come here and become a rockstar and let it go to their head.
Used car salesmen at home would be kings here...on so many levels if you know what I mean.
It's a good thing most of them don't have the wearwithal to come up with a visa and airfare to get here!
yes bottomline.
someone told a bunch of idiots that their sh*t don't stink and they REALLY believed it.
which makes it harder for semi-normal expats here.
thanks you jerks for pioneering the way here!!!!
I don't think it's our fault. I lay the blame squarely at the feet of the Chinese people that openly adore us, want photos taken with them, want us to pat their baby on the head, want us to say 'hello' and treat them like friends, invite us out to dinner, speak on their behalf on a TV dating show, teach them English, even bed them, tell them about our culture, as uncivilized as it might appear to them. Give us a break!!! We didn't ask for it. It just happens. Step aside god, I'm comin' thru!!! The devil made me do it.
Ya know, after reading this post I could kind of understand where you are coming from. I think it's obvious that when you get the rock star stares like we all do being foreigners it kind of gets to your head. You start thinking everyone is staring at you cause your different and hot stuff. I took advantage of coming to China not only to teach English, but also to continue my career in acting. I didn't come here thinking it would be easier for me because I'm different, if anything I think it's going to be a bit more challenging because of the language and culture barrier and differnece there is for now. Kind of like taking a different route to Hollywood than what most people would take. Jackie Chan did it, why can't I? lol.. Getting your picture taken by random people and being treated like I've been treated here with free food and drink just by saying hello *Because they want to get to know you* can get to your head sometimes. I believe it's ok to live out a little dream of being a local celebrity, and smile when people want to get to know you. You took the chance on coming to a different country not knowing how people would react to your presence and since it's a positive one why not take advantage of it and feel good about yourself... Now as for the people that take it too far and think they're shit don't stink I agree with you, but at the same time people take any kind of "celebrity image" they get a bit too far and run with it. Annoying? yes but he's only making himself look bad. He's not ruining it for the rest of us. Have fun here. If it's work of pleasure the reason why you came to China, take the positive vibes you get from people and go to town with it. You won't get this kind of hospitality back home... Wherever you're from. :p
nevermind:
Sorry man, where I'm from is a million times more hospitable.
HazzaF1:
You may be right with your experiences, but I've been taken care of here a lot more than I ever have been. I've seen nothing but positives with people here. Maybe it's because I'm still new here and not jaded yet..
