Q: Why aren't you going home for the holidays?

I'm not going home for Chinese New Year's vacation for the first time. If I could I 100% would, but I am surprised that a lot of my friends aren't going home.

Because it's barely a week off, which doesn't constitute holidays in my book, and because it's about the only time of the year cities are clear of obnoxious peasants.

I'm going to the wife's family home, and I can't wait, it's always a treat. It's a rip-roaring, masticating celebration of smacking gums and chicken feet. Not enough fireworks in China to drown out the wife's sister when there's ribs for dinner. If I'm lucky I may even get to see my mother-in-law on the toilet again. Silly old sausage always forgets to lock the bathroom door. So...fingers crossed on that, they say forth time's a charm. Yep, it's three weeks of heaven waiting for yours truly. Yeyyy.

Because, it's too expensive!angel

I feel like 'Jimmy-Two-Times', who always said everything twice: ''I'm gonna get the papers, get the papers...'' ...'Goodfellas 1990'

'Cut here' The Cure on I-tunes followed by Lauryn Hill 'Tribute to Nina Simone'....'I'm feeling good'

Too expensive? Probably same flights cost as your trip to Spain!

I was kidding. As soon as you book return ticket with connecting airports price goes up. Return PEK-BRC (or any other big EU/UK city) goes for 5k Rmb in Feb, and if I want to exit in my passport country, it's another 3-5k.

I didn't look how much, but trip to Spain is because of the refund.angel If I stay here, I'm fully booked (6 classes/day) at Training mill.

Got to get my last year's refund, so I need ticket.

Why bother? Everyone is busy. It's not vacation time at home. I go back and hang out alone all day. Everyone says 'Why don't you come home for Christmas?' Waste of time and money. Go to Thailand.

In most cities it's the best time of year, everyone sods off back to the countryside. It's quite, it's the only time you can actually hear yourself think. The pollution generally clears up as the factories close down, although this does depend on the firework laws wherever you are. It's the only time an otherwise hell hole becomes a semi decent place. Unless that is, you live in tourist place, in that case prepare for a week of horror!

It's my main 2-week holiday of the year so don't always want to go back to the UK. Was there last year, this year somewhere else in Europe with my wife.

I stayed in SH for the holiday last year.  I was shocked at how absolutely EMPTY the whole city is.  The streets were positively deserted!  Everything was closed.  The dogs and cats of my neighborhood took over the streets.  Walking around was surreal, like some apocalypse has taken place and I was the only one left.  So cool!

If you so stay, stock up on your essentials.  I couldn't find any markets open, only Family Marts and such.

RandomGuy:

This only applies to tier-1 cities because most of their population is made up of migrants from other provinces. Here in Foshan most of the shops are owned by local families who stay in the city during spring festival, so they are open. Migrants make up no more than 20% of the population.

Would this also apply to Beijing? Would it be a good idea to visit Beijing during the Chinese new year?

Seems like kind of a backhanded mean spirited question.

I don't like this Nice Brice, most of his questions seem kinda back handed like that. Half his posts are just his own questions doesn't participate in the discussions at all. Bet here he wants people to say they're broke or don't have anyone to visit back home. I mean really what's the objective here for this question?

Lots of reasons not to go home for a winter holiday. I did go home this year but for one thing if your home base is a northern climate and you live in south china you're leaving comfortable weather for bitter cold.

Why not take a summer holiday instead and leave sweltering heat for nice summer weather? Always more expensive to fly at peak times like Christmas/New Years as well.

Seems like this question is really a lead for people to say they can't afford it or they don't have family/friends at home so the asker can feel superior. Par for the course from nice brice
