Q: Why is China trying to implement real-name systems on just about everything?
First it was kitchen knives, then train tickets, now social networking sites....etc.
CONTROL OF POPULATION, and nothing else. No need to say anything else.
as happy stated it is all about control soon to be implemented in other countries as well
Optimistic people will say that the government wants to crack down harder on piracy, terrorists, and other dangerous people. This could be true to some extent. But everyone knows a smart criminal can circumvent any controls the law might implement. Only the stupid criminals get caught and the innocent suffer. Less optimistic folk will tell you that the government considers everyone with freedom of thought to be dangerous. All of us are potential enemies of the state.
Kitchen knives, Really? Does this mean that I have black market kitchenware? I have yet to give a name for any of my cutting devices.
For the answer, control as stated above. Most people arn't as willing to openly express negative (even if true) opinions on social networks about people/ organizations/ countries if they know said people know who they are.

Kitchen knives is real. i remember when beijing 2008 olymplic,the beijing people only allow buy two kitchen knives and need register their name. recently , some city even decide people must use real name when they buy condom. that is real ridiculous. as chinese, of course we want our living circumstance safer,but any policy shouldn't be exaggerated, we want more reasonable security policy and people will support it voluntarily.
As a Chinese, i am pretty sure that it will greatly reduce the number of weibo users , weibo is like a chinese version of twitter, a platform for chinese to discuss anything you want,including freedom, democracy, and any other controversial subjects. Westerners may think Chinese not that concerned about those things, you are completely wrong,once you see the number falls so rapidly!

Well, consider how the protest is moving at the moment. And, also consider the sorts of things that have happened overseas using social network media... mass protests, 'spontaneous' demonstrations or large gatherings, massive ravesor crashes... all with a single tweet, blog, sms, etc..
Put your real name on it... and it just won't happen... who wants to be done in this country for inciting a riot? Whether peaceful or not... and with the sort of anger that is just simmering ready to boil over, who really wants to be done for EVERYTHING that might come after it??
Part of that "etc" is signing up for MMORPGs. As if it wasn't bad enough we can't play games from back home, we have this hoop to jump through. Alas, control is the name of the game. We are merely pawns.

I have the same question Shining. Some of my frfiends play Star Wars Galaxies with no trouble at all and others need a vpn. WTF?

My favorite online game is Guild Wars. I tried to connect to the "trial" page off of the official web site www.guildwars (dot) com, and it came up the proverbial "page timed out." I figured it would be better than nothing, as all my legally bought software is on my home computer, which is in storage back in the States. On a completely different topic, boy, will that hard-drive be outdated when I finally get it outta storage, lol.

Any game I have tried to download and play doesn't work. I don't play the kind you pay for, so that is probably why. I'm just a casual player, so I don't see the point in paying when I'll be bored within the next month or two. I don't have a vpn yet (it's supposed to be coming in the mail), so maybe I'll try with that.
