Q: Why do Chinese people like Germans so much?
Hallo! Every time I am in China and I tell them I am German, the reaction is almost always the same every time: "German cars are the best", "Germans are very intelligent", "Germans are good". I was very surprised the first time I heard this. I certainly don't get the same warm welcome in many other countries such as France!
Yes you have given the world the invention of the Mercedez and other great cars. People appreciate that very much. I'm surprised you don't get the same warm welcome in France. I also like Germany's beer festival. Germany's soccer team is outstanding!! 
To be fair, you didn't invade China a couple of times within the last hundred years, neither did you take many of its ethnic minorities and send them to extermination camps!
The French probably feel about you the same way as the Chinese feel about the Japanese!
I personally don't mind the Germans, especially the beer, but one doesn't have to think too hard about why the French might not like you.

The Germans are famed in China for good beer and good cars. I am sure in the eyes of the Chinese, that amounts to great people and a great nation. PS: Live in China long enough and you will learn not to take on face value what the Chinese actually say. That is not a derogatory statement aimed at you personally. We all face it to one extreme or another.
Well, considering China deemed Hitler as a powerful ruler, would the contradition surprise you, besides, you guys do have the best beer, cars are second best Im afraid, I believe Italy has you in that department.
Don't feel too special - I get the same thing about Australia, except for the cars.

It's a typically Chinese thing. They all learn one or two things about a few countries and then repeat them to you while praising you (giving you face), and then keep a few stereotypes to use later in the conversation (for when you start to say negative things about the Chinese).
Next time, just for fun, tell a few of them that you are from other nations and this is what you'll usually get for praises:
France: you make the best grape wine (red wine), you are all very romantic, you're handsome
Thailand: there are a lot of lady-boys in your country
England: you are all very good gentlemen, very strong and brave people, you're handsome
USA: you make the best movies, are very open minded, you're handsome
Nigerian: how have you been able to afford a plane ticket to come to China? -OR- Hmm?! Why aren't you Black?/You don't look African
Finland: ah. (that's usually the answer to non-mainstream countries, ie. they know nothing about it and hence haven't prepared their generic comments)
Japan: oh. (facial expression changes to serious)

if they didn't they would not have planted all those Shady Trees for your Guys to march under (sorry mister Spoon)
The Chinese say that to all the boys. They say they love psycho punk mutants also.
