Why do people from anywhere trust the local doctors more?  It is cultural familiarity.  Plain and simple.

Had an in-grown toe nail and the local TCM doctor tried to use spirit crystals on me. The fact that so many Chinese people still buy into this stuff is both sad and hilarious.

Because most of the therapies are effective to the locals.  You will witness the same scenerio in other countries.

No they don't. Most Chinese people I know laugh at it and say it's something old people believe in.

I will relate one case, you draw your own conclusions.

One youngster, maybe about 10 years old, was getting sick with colds, headaches, coughs, runny nose, etc, every 3 or 4 weeks.  And very skinny, no need to X-Ray to see bones.  At my insistance, my friends did take him to doctor and asked doctor to make a full blood analysis.  Yes, kid was deficient in most chemicals and vitamins, one of them (vitamin D) was less than 1/3 of minimum amounts.  Prescribed a regimen of vitamin supplements for 6 months, and was carried out.  I asked parents if they were taken the kid to see doctor again on follow up visit and another blood test, they replied to me "No need, doctor does not make mistakes".   So, today they have no idea if treatment was succesfull or not, if kid needs further attention, etc.

In my mind, doctors here are considered almost like semi gods, infalible.  And yes, many treatments are to sit on a chair and get a couple of bags of IV, plus one of antibiotics.  They use that as we use aspirins......

derek:

I agree totally with that assessment. If I have the slightest cough, my wife and her mother start in with the..."C'mon, let's go to the hospital", crap!

I'm confused by some replies here.

Don't any of your Chinese friends who had cold and been cured by Chinese medicine tell you this?  Almost every Chinese kids have been used Chinese medicine when having a soft ills.

I can't say Chinese medicine is very good because I know it's not primiry choice for serious ills, but it does decrease the side effects by using it. For a cold, it will take bit longer time to cure, compare with western medicine. It's very good actually, Chinese medicine are mainly to care for the health of our body, not to have ill in the first place. Western medicin cure a cold quicker but it got stronger side effects sometimes cause people even got faint (I've been experienced it once).

Of course we respect Chinese medicine alot, meanwhile we know it clearly it's not God.
