Q: why do drivers aim their cars, buses, bikes at people and step on the gas?

instead of slowing down a little and passing behind them

It's a wild west showdown thing. Someone has to move and as the law of nature has it the strongest win. I've even started doing it on my motorbike but I'm not good at 'chicken' and I normally give way to the pedestrians. They seem less worried about having an accident than I.

I guess they are trying to bring the population down so as to have the one child policy repealed?

I read it as being selfishness, each driver only cares about getting there, not about anything else. It is the same as when you queue up for anything in this country, it always becomes a fight.

Normally there seems to be a flow and everybody just barely passes everyone. I walk with some women that just walk across 6 lanes without looking while texting. I've seen plenty of these people that step on the gas when I am in front of them. At the speed they were driving I have would easily gotten out of their way. When they stomp on it, I have to jump. I wish I knew why they drive like this. I will counter by quickly kicking the door in and then holding my knee as if he hit me. I'm also good at faking.

LAR:

"I will counter...............he hit me." It sounds like you're playing futbol!! Too funny bro!!!!!!!!!!!!! Ha ha. I would LOVE to see the look on a Chinese face if you did that!!!!!!!!!! LOL! LOL!!!! And, ya gotta really ham it up..lay sprawling on the pavement, moaning, etc!!!!!!!!!! He he!!!!!!!

the equally interesting question is, why do pedestrians always walk on the road? In my hood we have nice broad roads, a bike lane on both side and a nice even sidewalk. But people are walking on the road all the time, noone is using facilities such as pedestrian crossings.

is it lack of education or lack of willingness to follow the rules?

LAR:

It's called A LACK OF COMMON SENSE! :( I've seen Asians doing the same thing back home.

Scandinavian:

20 years ago the road of China would have had very few cars, mostly bikes, so back then it would have been safer to walk on the streets. as old habits die hard, I can understand why a 70-year old would not realize the world is changing, but man it pisses me off to see a grandmother push a pram into traffic when there is a perfectly flat sidewalk

This is something I've wondered about and indeed I notice the same thing on a daily basis. I put it down to the psyche of the average Chinese male. They don't have many moments of dominance in their life. But in a car and faced with a pedestrian, they are suddenly in a position of strength.

They can pursue the favourite pastime of the Chinese driver - stick their hand on the car horn and go for it.

It must give them an extreme feeling of wellbeing!

Scandinavian:

or maybe they are just trying their best to get home to get yelled at by their wife.

actually there is something to it. If you look at driving style/vehicle type, then certain cars, the bigger ones, especially those without blue license plates, tend to be far worse at following rules that e.g. a small passenger car.

Big car = man feeling important, what happens if he totals it, he will get a new one through the same channels as his current one

Small car = working person, cannot afford to have the car damaged, does not drive well, but at least doesn't accelerate towards people

lack of driving knowledge? lack of traffic laws? care less about others? ignores the consequences of hitting someone? wants to show others "I've got a car too"? maybe all of the above?

Scandinavian:

lack of law enforcement, the police cars are just as bad as the rest of them. It's not uncommon to see a car pulled over and talking to a police person, but it is far more common to see traffic violations happen right in front of the police persons without any consequences.

Stupid does what stupid do........End of Story

Scandinavian:

maybe it would be more correct to call it "ignorance" I actually don't think most of them actively want to become killers by hitting people, of course some does, but generally I don't think they know what actually happens when 2 tons of metal hits something (or what happens when 10 tons of bus hits 2 tons of SUV, because if they did, maybe seatbelts would be more in use)

A few months back I had a related experience that (to me at least) sums up driving in China, (and more particularly, Nanning).

I was on my e-bike and I was traveling down a main thoroughfare, 3 'car' lanes in each direction (with a solid centre intersection) a two lane 'bike lane' (or non-motorised vehicle lane to give it it's full name) each side, separated by a solid metre wide, tree lined 'verge' although it had gaps to allow vehicles to get kerb side, and a wide (3 metres) sidewalk.

Some bozos were walking down the centre of the 'car' lanes, and it  was rush hour, so hundreds of cars had moved into the bike lanes, so loads of bikes (including myself) had moved onto the sidewalk. I was happily driving down the sidewalk when I was forced to swerve violently to the side which ended in a slow speed fall, by a freaking car doing at least 30mph down the bloody sidewalk, against the flow of traffic.

WHY?????

Damned if I know, now it's just TIC, shrug.

I bought my bike about 4 months ago.......  haven't had an accident ...BUT ,,,You know there had to be a BUT, I did get clipped buy a woman driver and got a dent on my protective bumper .....  not knocked down and she certainly didn't acknowledge her attempt to kill me......my wife has put a couple other little dings on the thing, she doesn't acknowledge any responsibility for any of them  and my favorite, after all my Chinese family warning me of the dangers..............  My 48 year old brother-in-law smashed his bike up and had to borrow mine for a couple days while getting his fixed............. I won't ride double with the wife..... sometimes you have family of 4 on these things...same as at home, you never know about the other guy, what will he/she do............  actually it is a fun thing I like to do, go out and gamble your life on the road.....not really your life but serious injury is certainly possible.
