Is the west the best?
How many of the best and brightest really stay here, or move back?
This would help explain the utter lack of innovation, and the prevelence of replication.

The government even has incentives for returning grad students who start, or take part in starting a business here. A PhD can get up to 1million RMB and a MBA can get up to 200k RMB. Strangely enough, that doesn't seem to be enough.
Perhaps it is because if the family had enough to send the person to a foreign grad school in the first place, the incentive money is just pocket change.
that's the plan, they know what this country is and where it's headed. also once you get a taste of freedom, after spending your life in this place, would you really want to come back?
FOr the same reason half the rich guys in China want to leave and live abroad.
I think more intellectual individuals tend to enjoy certain freedoms that aren't allowed here .
They get offered better jobs, the air is cleaner.... they can say and do what they pretty much want. Living in the west is an investment in their future. Not so much in China.

That's why my rich friend owns a monkey and a malaysian bear. What freedom can the west give the Chinese rich ? The Chinese wealthy can do -- every thing -- I repeat, e.v.e.r.y.t.h.i.n.g in China

If you're narrow-minded enough to believe owning wild animals is all there is to freedom.. then you deserve to stay in China
it is not surprise that chinese people studying abroad and never come back.contrast with china, the western country have more better social security system and more natural environment and less working pressure. that why so many richer send their children and fortune to other countrys.
Because as soon as they get there, we eat them! (after all, who doesn't like to eat Chinese?? Or Thai, Indian, Italian......)
Are you sure they don't want to come back ?
In China, most of our students that can go abroad have enough connections through their family to kill 5 government leaders and then just claime they all suicided.
There's being rich in the west. And then there's being rich in China.

That's interesting and quite believable. But many middle class families save every cent they have to send their kid abroad....not just the rich kids....and yes I know all about them.
They drink the local lemonade (none of that fake koolaid crap) and find that it's pretty tasty, especially the raspberry lemonade. They can escape their parents. They can be respected at work and have more free time afterwards. I'm not saying the Western world is paradise, but it has its perks, especially considering that chocolate is a decent price.
A friend of mine is the accountant at a local business college,, they just love asian students, they register and come here and just disappear, so the school can get another student and the tuition.I don't know what the students do , but they do disappear.

many schools have a set up where they send inadequate students abroad. the first year they flunk out, but find a way to remain in the country for 4 years . in the end they purchase a counterfeit degree then come home a college grad w/ a degree from canada, usa, uk, or australia. isnt education grand?
In South Africa Chinese people who work as hard as they would in China tend to make a lot of money.
I suspect that China being so competitive it would be harder for them to do so here.
My Chinese friends in SA also tell me that they would prefer if their children did not have to do their schooling in China (although most of them send their kids to their granny for a few years when they are small to master the language)
