If you go to a temple here it caters to what they call "Chinese religion" which is a mixture of Taoism, Confucianism, Buddhism and folk religions. Millions of people go to temples in China every day but if you asked them about their religion most would likely say they don't have a religion. Aside from the CCP discouraging religion, are there other reasons?
There are no hidden secrets in this case. It is what it is. I do believe you when you say that most chinese people will claim they are not religious. It could be because most chinese don't go to any church of any kind and they don't religiously follow anything as in lessons about a particular religion. If they don't believe in any religion then they don't have a religion.
they taught only to think of religion as christian, muslim , hebrew
However, many that I have talked to will say that they are "spiritural," so it may be a matter of semantics.
