Q: why do parents torture their children?

many parents send their children to all sorts of "study" camps. i'll give you an example student a is not very bright (possible learning disorder) gets sent to a 10 camp to study english (10 days 10 hours a day) then off to study chemistry (15 days 9 hours a day!) no break no days off .

i forgot to mention many of these students have no interest in the subject matter that they are being forced to study

Because it's a competitive world and they want the best for them. Not saying I agree with the amount of work so many kids here have to do, but I think that's the main reason. Kind of like Michael Jackson's dad, pushing him so hard. Many people probably thought "Yeh, but look what it got him." Then of course there are the shit parents who just want their kid out the house, and of the portion who want their kid to be successful there's a percentage who want that for selfish reasons, but on the whole it's just parents wanting the best for their kids in an increasingly competitive world. That's what I believe anyway.

I must confess I have had to pull my wife back from pushing the kids on occasion

However I think and hope we have the right balance.

We don't send them to camps but home work time is homework time and we encourage them to have a healthy hobby like playing a musical instrument

-Because there is an illusion of meritocracy and a complete disregard for both talent and creativity in this culture. The centuries spent in rote-learning of Confucian 'classics' created a system of education that is stifled.

I agree with mArtiAn, I do hate it.  Kids here barely get to live and learn.  I was once a teacher of art for a summer camp for kids and they were so excited to be in my class and just be able to do free art without so much instruction and studying, then a Chinese teacher came to my class and started to boss the kids around and tell them what they were doing "wrong" (in the project they were doing there was no such thing as a WRONG way).  So I had to go to our superior and ask them to not allow teachers to come in my class and start overriding my authority.  I think its sad though because in that situation I felt like I was making this whole thing of foreigner vs. Chinese teaching styles which isn't what I wanted to do.  I just wanted the kids to enjoy my class without pressure.  I do think  that the kids who actually benefit from such camps like crimochina was talking about are in the minority.  They seriously need to think of a balance here between work and play for kids.

Reason why some kids end up having white hair in their early teen age or having no clue about what's going around them or being unable to debate about any topic...Just a lot of time spend with their noses in books without really learning.

My neighbour daughter is second-grade high school student. she will face the national college entrance examination next year. she have to study from 6.am to 1 am, sometime she need study still 2.pm then can go to bed. and wake up at 6.am again. her school will take a test for all same grade level  students every month, and publish the ranking in public. her mother resign work and stay home to supervise her's studying  since the elementary school.  her mother totally understand how much   pressure her daughter is  suffering. but she fail her daughter won't have a good job and happy life in the future, so she must ask daughter do this without hesitate.

crimochina:

ice: and that is something i don't get. why force your child to have 3-4 hours a sleep. lack of sleep does serious harm to developing brain. a sleepy brain can not retain or retrieve information effectively. the entire world knows this! that is why sleep deprivation is the no.1 form of torture.

i am sick and tired of having classes of brain dead students.

crim: she is not my daughter, i hope i have one but first thing i need find a girl want to marry me.

by the way, people know how much pressure on their kids, so they will absolutely make sure their child have good circumstances and enough sleep. overnight studying happened usually not everyday,  these parents and kids know how to schedule their time.

if your mean this studying attitude would cause brain dead, then only one school will have hundreds brain dead kids(i am kidding).

chinese people not fool as you think, these parents like their children and they also want give them a happy  childhood and teenager time. but fact is fact, especially in china, competition is fierce, your tired, your losted.

people always say competition is fierce, i'm sorry i just don't see it. i see an incompetent lazy workforce (mostly) . i see students who are unwilling to put the necessary effort to accomplish the task. but the exam scores to get into high school and college are important. other than that i do not see where the competition is? the bus driver can't drive a  bus(who did he beat out)! the repair man doesn't know the first thing about fixing anything .

i know you have a lot of chinese students, some of them are diligence, some of them are lazy, and some of them are faineant.   but when you saw the key school's student in the big city (especially in xi'an ) you definitely will understand what is competition is. some of children's studying enthusiasm even the adult feel it is  unbelievably.
