Q: Why do some parents give their kids "funky" haircuts?

I've seen a kid shaved almost bald with just a patch of hair on the top of the scalp...is there some meaning to some of these haircuts?

Yes, it is! Mother, father or parents friend is coolhairdresser. Parents also copy last kid star from Chinese TV Shows.

You mean with the patch of hair right above the forehead? I think that one is traditional.

Not sure whether I would call them funky. I asked about that and there is some cultural thing involved with a "traditional" Chinese cut - leaving a patch of hair or a rat's tail. I have one kid in a kindergarten that has '2012' left as the hair shape on his head while the rest is almost bald. Can't figure what tradition that is. Another has the smiley face! Tradition! Poor bloody kids - parents messing with their brains.

It's another reason I refuse to let a Chinese barber (and I use the term loosely) anywhere near my hair. Unfortunately this has resulted in me now having a mullet and having my children despair for me!!

DD, try a crewcut, I bought my own haircutters (in the UK) and my wife cuts my hair every couple of weeks.

In my experience some of them are pretty good. You just need to be very specific in telling them what you want or else they have a tendency to do what's familiar to them which probably isn't what you want.

I went so far as to have the style of cut written in Chinese for the barber but still ended up with that familiar Chinese cut. Oh vanity begone!!! I can't bear to have a crew cut or buzz cut.

Hugh - I have actually purchased my own cutters and cut my own hair but am leaving the back. Seeing how far I can get with a mullet. My students love my little pony tail. Awwww.

How about the mao cut and lets all look like the 50s.

The long braid (rat tail) is when chinese wanted to please Manchurian rulers in the 1800s.

The spot on the forehead? See it on kids on  Chinese TV and old pictures. Anyone really know?

just let it grow. Chinese ladies have the most beautiful long hair in the world!

Saw a kid with a manchu queue. I didn't know what to think. That's like tattooting the Japanese flag on his head.
