Q: Why do store cashiers simply refuse to sell an item that doesn't scan?
This frustrates the hell out of me. Imagine: you're at your local supermarket and one item doesn't scan. Without any thought of calling for a price check or manually typing in the product code your cashier removes the item and puts it to the side, refusing to sell it to you.
I've been at the store, one item in hand, and had to leave without making a purchase due to this idiocy. Do cashiers think people don't actually want to buy stuff, or are they employed because of some special government care in the community project?
Yian, stand your ground here. It happens all the time. Make them send someone to scan the price. If they still refuse, at least in the largest chain supermarkets, go the Service Center. Explain the problem to them. If you don't speak even Chinese, use TPR. They'll get the point. The cashiers are supposed to call for a price check. They are just lazy sometimes. If you do complain, and if they didn't make the price check, they are scolded and sometimes fined. Just stand your ground. They are taking advantage of you as a foreigner. This business about "no price" happens all the time.
9819 is right. When I go to Metro, as silly as this may sound, the mustard never scans and they always try to just put it to the side. I stand there and tell them I want it and wait, sometimes holding the line a lot longer than I want to.
I had this problem a couple of times, the first time this happened I went home without my item. The second time, I insisted that they scan it or enter the price. When the cashier refused, I left the store. The manager chased after me and tried to get me back. My girlfriend translated for me (we were just friends at the time) and he said that he would help. I never had problems aftger that. If an item does not "scan" the cashier enters it manually or asks for a price check. We are all friends.
