Q: Why does China need so many foreign English teachers?

English is simple

Chinese English teachers are not all bad

If Chinese wanna go abroad just to learn their English here without know anything better about the culture and people, etc, they are just some failed ppl. No one cares if they speak good English or bad English at all.

Foreign English tearchers nowadays are too much for Chinese. 2/3 aint qualifited for language level, own culture background knowledge, and not focus on teaching, etc....not to mentions 1/3 are sneaking in China.

Have to say Chinese parents ain't well-educated, so this is the main reasone they need 3/3 foreign teachers

They need them to teach proper English, not Chinglish. English is used for Business, Aviation and The Internet also it is an official language for the WTO, WHO etc

Have you noticed how those European speaks English in WTO, WHO,UN,etc? oh mama it's outrage ..lol

I had to laugh - the question is about "why do we need teachers" and the question itself contains a colossal grammar mistake (Have to say Chinese parents ain't well-educated). Perhaps that is a hint? I in no way mean to be unkind, but I do point out that good education is valuable.

Actually, "ain't" is a colloquial expression of the southern American dialect group, which also happens to be the largest English dialect group in the world. "Ain't" is perfectly fine. ;)

Well beyond proper pronunciation and conversational skills. It provides many of the students a once in a lifetime chance to see the world from a new prospective; to open their minds to a new way of thinking; to grow not only their language skills but to grow as an individual. Plus those little experiences can become the driving force in the student's life to become better than he/sh ever thought he/she could.

Plus it's the parents demanding it of the schools. And the whole mentality of 'No one cares if they speak good English or bad English at all" then why waste your time studying at all?

Localla:

Every Chinese can have their passport very simple and easily now. Many Chinese, like my parents and some young ppl they don't want to go abroad at all, nor they need someone "foreign" to teach them how to be individual. Try to confront with a young man and say you want to teach him to be an individual, see what you will get.......I well aware that many young chinese girls always ask navie questions in the English classes, you have to understand Chinese a bit well, they don't need any of you to help them grow up..etc........See those Chinese living in Chinatown of other countries, no locals ever care about them at all....Some Chinese here want good English for good jobs etc, but they can learn it from Chinese English teacher too..Foreign English teacher got nothing...here as a matter of fact....

Well I'm not even a teacher so whining about all the foreign teachers isn't going to bother me. As for the see where I get for telling some guy I'd help teach him to be an individual, I've done it. He takes time to enjoy the journey now, and he has become quite skilled at thinking outside the box (something that has relieved some of the stress from work and impresses his boss with his problem solving skills). It's not about forcing my ideas down someone throat to make him an individual, it's about making him question and discover for himself.

You say Chinese teachers can teach English without native speakers? I say where do you come from???? I speak to students on a regular basis. I am not a teacher, but I can clearly see when they do not have a native speaker available. I know countless English majors who speak deplorable oral English. Most schools are not equipped with enough Chinese teachers who can speak English correctly. If you want to learn proper English, you need a foreigner who can speak it, whether it is by video, recording or in person. That is elementary. You say English is simple? Then why can't 3/4 of China speak it? I'm not talking about Chinglish. I mean conversational International English.

Actual answer to this question:

China needs so many foreign English teachers because Chinese people (rightfully so) believe that knowing English is highly important for international business and affairs.

This has caused a huge English language teaching industry to spring up in China. So why do they need so many? Simple, it's a business. You go to an accredited school, they pay you say 15,000rmb a month and charge parents 25,000rmb a semester per student because they have a "foreign teacher". 25 students would be about 625,000rmb a semester, just for that grade, so the cost of the foreign teacher and the local teachers isn't much in comparison.

More teachers = more money.

Why does it bother you? Last time I checked no one is FORCING foreign English teachers on students. It's not like we bust in their houses and start teaching English unwelcomed and sans invitation. You may prefer to stay in China all of your life or may have no need for English but you don't represent the entire population (contrary to what you clearly believe). A good portion of my students want to study in an English speaking country. Other parents simply want their children to have more opportunities, which speaking another language (especially English) grants you. It's not for nothing that the richest people I come across in China all speak English. Speaking another language instantly opens a whole new world of people with whom you can communicate and network. It's the same reason I study Chinese.

Oh and I'm sure you'll say that the Chinese teachers are just fine so why can't they teach the students? It's true , I have come across some Chinese teachers who speak English well . The overwhelming majority I know , however , don't speak clearly or well enough for me to even understand them without guessing what they're trying to say . The effects of having teachers like that are evident in the speaking level of my students .

That's why there are so many foreign teachers here .

It's really just a case of supply and demand isn't it. We teach English to those who want to learn. For every one we teach there are 10,000 we don't. Would they liked to be taught given the opportunity? Don't really know. Don't really care. In smaller cities like Daqing there doesn't seem to be a great rush for people to learn English. But there are those clever parents who see a need for their kids to learn so they pay the tuition fees.
Regardless of how you want to put it Localla there is a requirement for more teachers in China than the world can supply at the moment so I guess you can say that those wanting to learn don't actually agree with you. Surprised?

There is a demand for English in China for business, for education. Subjects studied in school are about knowledge and learning to think. Try to get a higher education without being trained in lower school. 100% of Indias university grads speak English, China is to become the number one English speaking country in the world in the next 10 years.
I think Localla can speak better and write better than she does, Just an act, she knows too many words that would not be regular grammar,,,, like nazi.... Chinese can get a passport, but not a visa very easily. I think China should send all the women that want to live some where else go. No Visa for Localla types, have to have some standards.Canadas population was not growing fast enough so immigation has doubled our population in 30 years. I think our immiration should adopt a policy of more women make more babies. The China woman can come here and have all the babies she wants now.
Localla you have some culture shock, Why do you hate so much? Relax ! Try taking a valium or drink some Koolaide. Eat some of the brown things on the sidewalk, once they dry , they are crunchy.. Smile Smile

TedDBayer:

Yes CAT why do you let Localla even post, she should be banned. You rub out funny entertaing comments that I make and you let an aggetator like her post hateful insulting garbage?

My two cents worth:
If I am going to pay top dollar (Yuan?) for language lessons, I will want to study under a native speaker regardless of the language I am learning.
Let me ask you this Localla, should a person study Chinese from, say, a Japanese (or Korean, or British) teacher, who studied it in university? With Japanese accent?
That said, universities and schools really need to try to hire better qualified teachers. However, there is such a demand for them that many who should not be teaching are. Daqing Devil said it best: "supply and demand".

I guess for the same reason that in my country we have native Chinese teachers, native French teachers, native German teachers, native Portuguese teachers, native Spanish teachers, etc.

The world is becoming more interconnected and, as responsible citizens of the world, we would be doing ourselves and others an injustice not to be able to speak a few languages.

In high school and in college/university, all of my language teachers/instructors/professors were native speakers of the language they taught. My Spanish teachers were from spain and mexico, my french teacher was from France, and my german teacher was from Berlin. If you want the best, you get native speakers (qualified to teach, of course), no matter where in the world you are.

Traveler:

Good points. As you say, they need native English teachers. I studied Indonesian at school, by a mixed Indonesian-Australian teacher. She was also qualified as a teacher, which you also point out is necessary to teach a language. Sadly, most of the foreign "teachers" here aren't qualified as teachers. In addition, language is only one part of the studies; another significant part is the culture of the country where the language is used. While English is used in several major countries, a basic understanding of western culture is still achievable. Though again, most of the fake teachers, and those from non-native speaking countries, do not have the knowledge or skills to teach this to Chinese students. Language and culture are mutually inclusive. One cannot exist without the other. A thorough understanding of language, culture and communication is essential to teach that language. Just as it is essential to understand teaching theories, learning theories, behavioural and developmental psychology, and a host of other things that are required by law to become a teacher almost everywhere in the world. Except to become a foreign teacher in China.

Because Chinese people, even those who have many years of English education, still don't speak it properly. In all my experience in China, the only Chinese to ever speak English flawlessly was the HR guy for the entire company. Only one. Even the guys who hired me spoke English at MAYBE a 5th grade level. China needs foreign English teachers.

your poor english is exactly why china needs to offer more money to bring more qualified foreign english teachers. and why students in china should only be taught english by foreign english teachers. by the time the students get to a foreign english teacher it is too late the damage is has already been done.

It's called Demand and Supply. Someone obviously didn't attend Econ 101 ... It seems like you want to present a valid argument but you come off looking so amateur. Do you even spell check what you type before you type it? Advice: Write your comment in MS word before you post it and those red squigly lines will tell you what's up.... Otherwise your posts are painful to the eyes. More so a post about why China has so many English teachers. Killing your own argument.

Also to teach them the skills they will need when some of them go to foreign schools,
Plus they will learn to speak the correct way and be able to hold a comvesation and not speak with bad pronunciation that you hear when taught by not English teachers

Localla,

Chinese English teachers in middle and primary school only focus on grammar and vocab as they are only concerned on the students exam results and how that will reflect on their teaching ability. As a result many Chinese students struggle to speak English fluently.

In fact, many teachers (if they have not spend any time abroad) struggle to speak English fluently.

If you compare the English levels of a 2nd language English learner in Europe you will see distinct differences in their language ability.

Well let me check! China has the biggest population in the world that's one reason why you would need so many English teachers compared to other countries that are less populated. Another reason is if you carefully check your grammar you will see that 'reasone' is non-existent in the english language. Although I know what you mean it's still incorrect.
