Q: Why does everyone waste their coconuts?
So I'm walking around watching people toss their coconuts after paying 10 RMB to just drink the milk. Not one to take kindly to wastefulness, I go up and grab the coconut, rip it open and begin eating it.
For some reasone everyone laughs at me when I do that... they're really surprised, as if they've never seen anyone eat a coconut before. Even when I break open my own coconut, everyone laughs at me.
Is there some kind of cultural thing that says coconut flesh is the devil?
Not sure but I walked in a coffee shop waiting for a student and as I was waiting I saw two girls order some food. They had the good seat so when they left I went to go sit down and they hardly touched their meal. Maybe one or two bites...

Were the girls eating coconut? It is possible that some girls resemble coconuts, the ones you dream about, but usually they look like half lemons or two fried eggs.

post-80s Chinese serve larger portions and waste more food than I have ever seen other groups do. I suspect it is a combo of two things: simply not knowing better & some kinda odd psychological backlash from earlier days.
It's simply ignorance about the fruit: how, what to eat and why?
It's too hard to bite into or peel, and requires too much energy to break it open. Expending that much energy would necessitate a nap.

Don't be silly , Chinese people need to eat Chinese food. Coconut is not food. It must be boiled for hours in oil to be food.
Are they young coconuts or mature?
Young(green) coconuts are meant for drinking and are not commonly eaten. These ones are more common to see in the streets being sold to drink.
The mature(brown) ones have much less milk but more meat and are meant for eating.

This is actually a very good point here... They're just a little greenish, but otherwise completely white. The flesh is also not bad at all.

I don't know about coconuts, but the green in potatoes is poisonous. I had 2 GF with degrees in whorticulture. They would know.
chinese men are afraid to death of female features ., it reminds them of their "shortcomings" they want to play with them but yet they shame women who develop bigger coconuts especially early. ...

Not eating the flesh of the coconut seems odd in a place where people will sit and suck on a chicken foot or fish head to get every possible part of it.
diverdude may have a point, that there is an odd psychological phenomena at play here. It's called poor education and little emperor/empress syndrome.
There has actually been a lot about food waste on TV recently. Mainly focused on the fact that when people leave the table at a restaurant, they will leave a lot of half eaten dishes. Worldwide about 50% of food produced is never eaten, so those who are scared the planet cannot support a growing population should be scared of those wasting food.
