Q: Why don't more foreign bands come to play here?

I saw Black Rebel Motorcycle Club is coming to Shanghai soon, and it got me thinkin...how come there aren't more foreign bands coming to China?

They'd be able to sell out EASY

There are quite a lot of foreign bands coming to China to play these days actually, but most of them are small, unkown bands from Europe or Australia. Because most foreigners and Chinese have never heard of these bands, they don't get as much publicity as the likes of BRMC obviously. But check out the schedule of any major live music venue across the country, and you'll see several foreign bands or DJs scheduled to play. In Beijing, venues like Yugong Yishan have a foreign performer/band almost every other week. It sometimes surprises me, why such small obscure bands even decided to come here in the first place, but obviously they heard from somewhere that there's a huge thirst for new music amongst China's youth.

When compared to many years ago, there really has been a massive increase in foreign bands playing here. But one thing that you have to remember is that just as there's a limit to the number of foreign blockbuster movies that can be screened here, Chinese authorities carefully monitor and select what big names perform here and when....

They also restrict what songs they can play. Bob Dylan had many of his rejected.

Because locals wouldn't know good music if it slapped them in the face... Well that and the "government" controls who can play here and who can't....

Because unless they play sappy slow piano and have an olive oil voice then Chinese people aren't interested. Plus the government will scrutinize their lyrics and playing style to see if it will benefit a "harmonious society." That and Bjork's big fat mouth.

All the music is on youku anyways - what difference does it make if it's streamed or live?
