Do they doubt the quality/purpose?
The way I rationalize it is that they think that an accident will not happen to them, always to someone else, so no need to use them. And then lack of enforcement action will not do much good for promoting its use. I do have seen many cars where seatbelts are permanently hooked up, and they do sit on top of them
Because they are stupid they don’t wear helmets on motorbikes either….
It's easier to sue the driver after an accident if you say they didn't tell you to wear it.
Is it law in China?
If it wasnt the law in the States, more people wouldnt wear them.
Thakkudu:
It is law.. there are cameras in most citiesthese days which takes pics and fines 50rmb each time u pass one
woody:
I think it is only law to wear them on a toll road. I have always seen all up as soon as they near the toll gates and then take them off as soon as they leave them.

Without the law in the US, they'd be less popular. But their disuse in China is a completely different level.
Because they don't think it has any purpose and it isn't mandated by a law, that's why we see children playing in the front seat while the elders are driving
Because it's not illegal , no such law and nobody ever told me to use seat belt.
One time I was with my friend in a taxi, she was so surprised that I put seat belt on and she said " wow, I never knew there are seat belts in second row!
answer they all go how the hell will it help me bad reck i die good one i don't why would a belt help, just to much crap.
the speed isnt really fast enough to hrt anyone unless your out of the city

Actually, the human body is fragile enough that the seatbelt is important even in slow crashes. The human skull is easier to crack than a coconut.
Because the seat cover hides it, at least in the backseat. As for the driver seat, who knows. I was in the car with a new driver once, and the car was making a dinging noise because she didn't buckle her seat. She just ignored it. There are people back home who think it's stupid to wear a seatbelt. They'll say something like "If I'm in a bad accident, it's better not to wear one because then I'll die." That's a lame excuse, and chances are, if they fly out of the car, they might still survive with horrible injuries. I'm bad, I haven't worn one in China, but I'm usually in the backseat anyway.
It is because wearing the seatbelt would suggest that the driver is bad enough to allow a crash to actually happen.
Similarly wearing a helmet would be like advertising that you are bad at riding your bike.
Image is everything.
derek:
That is exactly the kind of backwards thinking that they believe in. Nicely done on that. So deep yet so obvious.

I too have heard this. I was told if you put on a seat belt then you make the driver lose face.
Didn't you know that seat belts and indicators are optional extra in China, they don't know what they are for. They buy a car just for the horn..
'I'm scared if car ignites (fire), I wouldn't be able to run out.'
I used that with cops once, buTT…they didn't believe me!
Sometimes you'll see a driver notice cops at the intersection ahead so put on their belt. As soon as they are past it comes off again. I think that they think they're being clever by getting around the law and breaking the rules.
I wonder how clever they'd feel with a steering column wedged in their chest.

I drove my car in US always with my seat belt fastened. Always!
I click my (driver's) seat belt before I sit behind the wheel.
When cop is looking at you from the distance (50 feet), it looks like you have seat belt fastened. Even when copper is cruising behind you, it's impossible to tell 'how' the belt is fasten..
Lack of education, enforcement and critical assessment of own driving skills. I do feel bad for the children though, compared to the US China has 1/3 the amount of cars, but 6 times the child traffic death rate.
