Did you open the account in another city?  If you did, empty it, and open another account to put the money in.

It's the stupid way they do things here.

It is.

I had a BOC account in Luzhou, and then moved to Chengdu - both cities are in Sichuan.  I was charged 4rmb each time, and that was in 2009.  Inflation is just a reason to increase charges.

think I read somewhere.... there are over 400 cities in China with over a million population ... if you are gonna change cities regularly, that could become a lot of bank accounts!! I have 2 and not going anywhere soon!!

tell them

if they ignore you, go to China Merchant Bank.  It's privately owned rather than state-owned

It is the same at China Merchants Bank. CMB charge 5 Rmb for ATM withdrawals (3000 Rmb daily) anywhere in China.

When you move to different city, you should close your account, and reopen new account in the new city.

I had to pay 15 Rmb to open new account at ICBC, where School deposits my salary.

There are no fees if you use your ATM for purchases around China, but as soon as you withdraw cash, any Chinese bank will charge fee, if you aren't in the same city.

icnif77:

Correction:

CMB charge 5 Rmb for ATM cash withdrawals anywhere in China lower than 1000 Rmb. If you withdraw 1100 Rmb to maximum 3000 Rmb a day, there is no fee.

Correction: For ATM cash withdrawals anywhere in China lower than 1000 Rmb fee is 5 Rmb. Cash ATM withdrawals at CMB from 1000 - 3000 Rmb (daily) are free, without any fee applied.
