Q: Why is so much clothing made out of synthetic fabrics?
I often see clothing in Chinese stores which looks good from a distance. When I check it out, it's made from synthetic fabric instead of cotton/silk/wool etc. Are synthetics cheaper to produce in China? Do people prefer them because they think they are more modern? Do they not want to iron? How do they stand wearing polyester in the summer?
Sythetics are actually better for the environment.

Try wearing a jacket in GZ NZteach.... its fecking 35 degrees...90% humiity.... I am stuggling to keep my sweaty underpants on :-)
This is China. Things are made cheaply. Synthetics are cheap.
I love my synthetic during Guangdong's summer. No sweat spots, no stress.

Yup. Synthetics are designed to be better than naturals. Try climbing Everest in a wooly jumper... or treking to the south pole in a cotton suit.
I grew up in Fairbanks, Alaska and Vermont. Outerwear was usually made out of waterproof synthetic fabric, often with goose down filling. So yes, we did use the more high tech synthetics like Gore-Tex, Thinsulate and other ones I can't remember. But for indoor, every day clothing, I still think natural fibers feel better against the skin. Silk and cashmere can actually work really well in long johns.
Clothes made out cheap polyester or nylon, like those shiny polo collar shirts middle aged Chinese men favor, don't breath well. They hold in the heat. Plus they smell bad.
Tencel or Rayon are the only synthetics I can stand, besides outerwear or bathing suits.
Try Thailand.... you can still get some really nice Thai silk garmets at a really reasonable price. When you see it/feel it/wear it, you will understand why it is so valued around the world.
*understand that I'm talking real Thailand,,, get yourself off the tourist circuit. Tourist circuit in TL sux just like it does everywhere else, except maybe more so.
Because many of the knockoffs are made in the same factories with the same machines. When they finish making the quota for the foreign markets they keep the presets on the machines and use cheaper materials to make the knockoffs to sell in the Chinese markets.
for hot weather - light cotton or silk wins out every time.

Anything is better than frills, sequins or cartoon characters seen on most Chinese women's clothes. 
duh...because china doesnt have cotton....or the cotton here is too bad...they have to import it from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh .so synthetics are cheaper for bulk production.
Uniglo in the States or any other country : nice cotton shirts. Uniglo stores in China have terrible synthetic crap I would never wear. Some friends in Beijing started buying lots of cotton sheets thinking they would appreciate in price . I laughed and said cotton is very inexpensive in every other country.
