Q: Why was the moon so important to China?
They were not the first and will probably be the last. But I can think of better ways to spend $15 Billion dollars. Fot $1 Billion America would have sold them a few moon rocks and a T-Shirt. So why did they do it?
you could ask the same question about India and their space program: billions spent when so many people live in abject poverty.
Like many things, it is about 'face' and the possibility that there are untapped natural resources which will be claimed by the first country with the ability to exploit them in a profitable way.
Also, there is an ancient map that shows the moon as part of China, so therefore it must belong to China

About Indian Space Program : it's a drop in their budget, certainly not billion*s*, it's 900 millions for 2013-2014. GDP is around 1.9 trillions.

Actually a space program, like the American, like the Indian, like the Chinese etc. does server more than it's direct purpose. It inspires people to want to become scientists, astronauts, explorers who will better the world. Just sad that for all the little Chinese boys and girls (but mainly boys, because lets face it, the first Chinese woman in space was not there to make it a reoccurring event, but to wiggle a bit of soft power just that once) they have no say in what education they are going to pursue as they will always end up in the family business.
Well, going to the Moon is on the todo-list for being a top notch power, works great to look like a modern nation, and so on. Scientific studies of the Solar System is helpful to answer lots of questions. Sadly, Chinese Space Agency is far from being open as the NASA, ESA, ISRO or JAXA about sharing their data.

Space is about weapons. All that talk about exploration and mining natural resources is utter BS. Even though all major countries that have a space program signed a treaty to not to put nuclear weapons in space, America and Russia has plenty of other non-nuclear weapons up there like satellite killers (More than 80% of all communications on Earth require satellites). If there is a WWWIII you will see what America and Russia have been doing in space for 30 years. China needs to join the club or they will be vulnerable. What is interesting is that the slides in this slide show came from the U.S. Air Force! China went to the moon to send a signal to America - Don't underestimate our determination to match your weapons in space - or at least be able to destroy them. China already "captured" a stellite in space by remote control two years ago!

Hypothetical my ass! What do you think was hoing into that huge cargo bay of 47 space shuttle missions? Sattelites are launched on individual rockets from Vandenberg AFB - not space shuttles. Also suggest you do a little Google homework and look up the X-37 and then come back and tell us all what its mission is.
You know the SR71 Blackbird spyplane was flying secret missions for 20 years before the public even learned of its existence. Do you really believe any poster on this forum will know what exactly is going on with in the 33 year old Space Command program run by the U.S. AIR FORCE whose budget is 5 times more thna NASA's?
strategic considerations aside, the moon holds symbolic value for two reasons: first, chinese base their calendar on the lunar cycle. festivals, harvests and so on revolved around the moon. the moon lady and moon rabbit are a few important mythological figures who appeared in the oldest and greatest chinese literary works. second, in the drive to copy american development, they are hoping to recreate the hype around the 1961 moon landing. it was an enormous morale boost in the states, after the russians had beaten them into space. achievement = success = happy citizens = stability = the rich get to keep their positions of power for a while longer.
I guess they want learn "Moonwalk", as Michael is not here anymore, they was in hope to find real , original teacher ...

About the OP, I think international prestige and space weapons are the two primary reasons China conquered the moon.
