Q: will the american govt pass legislation to up the tariffs on chinese goods?

there is legislation on the table in the usa to punish the middle kingdm for the currency thing by raising tariffs. funny thing though both dems and reps are united against it, i could have a blog about that in itself. hina seems to be scared to death of it and accuses the elected officials of "pandering to voters". yeah funny.

your thoughts i cant type anymore without being banned

Just idle threats, If America does this than some other poor country will just flood their market. Also China might threaten to get rid of their US bonds and I don't think the US could afford for that to happen. The US does this type of thing to a lot of countries, but they scream if the same country tries to do it to them.

I think it might be more serious this time. Even China has taken notice of the US politician's resolve and is getting worried. I think China should pay huge tariffs if it's not going to play by the rules. When the US helped China's admission into the World Trade Organization, China promised to abide by international trade laws. It's not doing that. Obama wants to solve this diplomatically but they've been trying to do that for years with minimal success. The US is going to have to fight fire with fire.

Some people think China will retaliate by selling its US treasury bonds but I doubt it. That would be bad for them as well. China's going to have to act like a big boy now if it wants to be taken seriously. Everyone must follow international trade laws. Even China.

Yes and the US plays the rules their way as well, I am not on the side of China at all just saying the US needs to stop moving the gaol posts like they do. Don't forget China has surpassed Japan, and the US is afraid that China will do the same to them. If you read what China is saying here though, this is the last thing they want! China can't afford to devalue it's currency, if they do than home we all go!!

Njord:

How are they moving the goal post and how does China remotely play the game following any of the rules? Lets start with currency manipulation and move on from there...

when it comes to china / US trade china is ripping the US off. you live here in china you see see the insane markup on products just because they are foreign brands. even when it comes to goods that are made in china. how is the US cheating china??????? the tariff on goods made in the US is 22% do the math the same camera that cost me 60us (400rmb) in asmerica costs 1200rmb, a 22% tariff amounts to 500rmb. they cheat to further markup up the price. look at other products computers, printers, tvs, monitors radios, dvd players. look at how they ban internet companies like facebook and twitter and then copy them

Come on guys this is a hot topic, and it is complex, let's not give the thumbs down and get agitated about politics. Yes you love your country and you are in China. You ask questions and you get answers.
We have got fat, we have lost weight, people walk into us, we walk into them, we drink, we teach, but shouldn't we listen, shouldn't we take into account our questions without preconceived answers we may have.
As Crimo said he might get "banned if he typed more"
Heah I understand a lot of things and frustration about people and places, but I appreciate this forum being one of the best!
BTW, I listen to Charlie Rose!!

crimochina:

The Chinese have the U.S by the balls and have had them for a while. The U.S will threaten but unless they get back up from other countries they wont do anything. It is possible that this is a bluff to get China to get China to ease up a little with their day light robbery. It is also possible they have the backing of the European community that are the worlds largest traders and the best back up anyone can get. If that's the case China will suffer.

beaufortninja:

China is quite possibly the most hated country in the world right now. All the other major powers (US, EU, Russia, India) would likely team up in the WTO if China tries to get big with the US. All countries are threatened and have been affected by China's shady trade policies.

The US already slaps tariffs on certain goods and China does the same in reverse.

This is all politics and nothing more. Some people believe the RMB is artificially low and others don't. I think it is easier for teachers here to say it is too low, while those in the import business (like myself) know that if it goes up much more, then we have to look to other countries as China will be too expensive!!

This is not to say that China is not a slippery snake on trade issues, but how is the US much better usually? The US can be the biggest trade bully there is!!

There are always 2 sides.

Njord:

dude... You have to admit there is still a HUGE trade imbalance... Crap leaving China far exceeds good coming into China (notice how I used words like crap and goods and how I used them?) ;)

Politicians in USA are, like in any other country, not really looking at how good the laws they approve are for the people they are supposed to serve. They just worry about being re-elected so the gravy train can continue.

Recently, tariff on Chinese made tires were raised to higher brackets when China was found to be "dumping" them in USA markets, at a price lower than in China. What was the result of this reaction ?. Well, Goodyear and Royal did not increase their sales, all of a sudden tires showed up in USA markets from Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand. And at very low prices too.

China does play the International Money market with sales and purchases of their currency to keep the Rembembi (yuan) valuation purposly low versus other currencies, so their ex[ports are cheaper and easier to sell abroad. That is widely known. What Chinese did not understand is that while it is OK to do it to an extend, when you get really greedy and go overboard with it, others will react back at you.

China is making so much noise now not really because USA is discussing a law in Congress, but because China is concerned that other countries in Europe, and the Pacific Basin, will follow USA footsteps and make similar laws, forcing them to stop keeping the yaun valuation relatively low for their benefit. Some claim a 30 % increase of valuation in the yuan will place it at true current value, I think 20 to 25 % will and should be enough. But that will cut Chinese exports in general to all countries abroad by at least one half.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
